The University of Illinois Chicago has selected Andrea Williams as director of intercollegiate athletics, pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Williams is a proven leader in athletic administration with 25 years of experience in collegiate and professional sports. She was the first African American woman to be appointed an NCAA Division I conference commissioner in 2016, and she currently serves as chief experience officer for the Utah Jazz. She will officially join UIC as director of intercollegiate athletics designate on Nov. 16. Source

Individuals with Type 1 diabetes who had the highest baseline blood sugar levels showed a significant improvement in glucose targets after a sleep optimization program led by UIC Nursing researchers. The results of the study were published in Diabetes Care, a journal of the American Diabetes Association. UIC Nursing Professor Pamela Martyn-Nemeth was the lead author.

She’s believed to be the youngest graduate of the college — at least since 1999 (as far back as digitized records go) — having turned 19 in March of her senior year.

Every summer, scientists in the UIC Pharmacognosy Institute host the Annual Atkins Garden Walk, an open house event that is free and open to the public. It includes time to explore the garden, discuss medicinal plants with researchers from the College of Pharmacy and hear a scientific lecture on a related topic. This year’s event features the Norman R. Farnsworth lectureship by Robert Verpoorte from Leiden University in the Netherlands (12:30 – 2 p.m.).
