Friday, 16th October 2026 This conference will focus on next steps for community energy across the UK, as implementation begins on plans for up to £1bn of investment through Great British Energy to increase community involvement in the development and ownership of local energy projects.

This paper compares ecologies of participation with energy and climate change in the UK, Norway and Germany. Given the limitations of mainstream approaches that view public participation as highly specific and occurring in discrete one-off processes linked to particular decision moments, new theories, studies and methods are emerging that view participations as diverse, constructed and interrelating in wider systems.

UKERC Researcher Appointed to RSE Young Academy of Scotland Dr Christian Calvillo Munoz, UKERC Researcher and Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde, is among the prestigious list of new members appointed to the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland (YAS). Established by the RSE in 2011, the Academy brings together leaders from business, academia, education and other professions from across Scotland for the public benefit.

At its AGM on 23 September 2026 the Royal Academy of Engineering elected 75 leading figures in the field of engineering and technology to its Fellowship. Among them is UKERC Co-Director Jianzhong Wu. Jianzhong, who was recently appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bath, leads UKERC’s Operating a Highly Renewable and Largely Electrified Energy System Theme. The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a special ceremony in London on 19 October.

UKERC Director Responds to Prime Ministers’ Energy Bill and Electricity Network Announcements The Director of UKERC, Professor Rob Gross, has welcomed today’s announcements from Prime Minister Andy Burnham on the removal of VAT from electricity bills, while highlighting further opportunities to reduce costs for consumers and the challenges facing electricity network development.

The Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) anticipate that data centres are likely to be the subject of considerable parliamentary scrutiny in this parliamentary session of the Scottish Parliament. This ARI aims to support SPICe in identifying expertise to inform scrutiny that relates to the environmental, economic and social impacts of data centres in Scotland.
