The Energy Research Hackathon is a collaborative initiative delivered by Energyz Black, in partnership with the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), Supergen Energy Networks, Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC), and SuperAIRE. The event brings together early career researchers, academic institutions, industry representatives, and policy stakeholders from across the UK energy sector to tackle real-world energy challenges.

Demand for critical minerals for energy transitions is propelling a significant expansion of mining and an evolving formal geopolitics for critical minerals supply security. Across the world, governments are exploring the potential of decentralised energy systems — the ‘local’ deployment of technologies such as rooftop solar, batteries, heat pumps, and smart grids — that can enable communities to generate and manage their own energy generation and consumption.

New funding has been made available through Innovate UK to support the development of ultra long duration battery energy storage demonstrators in the UK. The funding, which will invest up to £3 million in the first phase, and at least £10 million in the second phase, will support the delivery of electrochemical ultra long duration energy storage and the development and delivery of large scale ULDES demonstrators.

A new report from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) sets out practical reforms that could reduce UK electricity bills. Renegotiating for the subsidies for older renewable schemes or moving remaining policy costs into general taxation could deliver significant savings on energy bills.

Inclusion by Design: The Future of Energy Research EDI+, UKERC, Supergen Energy Networks Hub and IGNITE Networks+ have joined together to deliver an event to showcase of EDI+ Fellowship work and a conversation about inclusion in energy research. This will be a great opportunity to explore the impact of EDI+ Fellowship projects, engage in discussions on inclusive research cultures, and network with researchers, practitioners and sector leaders from across the energy and STEM communities.
