UMGC master’s students analyzed data and created tools to help Maryland’s Garrett County assess and communicate flood risks. Recent high-profile flood disasters, including Hurricane Helene in 2024 and the devastating floods that struck central Texas in July 2025, were stark reminders that flooding remains one of the nation’s most destructive natural hazards.

Dwight R. Smith is studying marketing and communications at UMGC, where he is an active student organization leader. Dwight R. Smith was at a crossroads. He had a productive, yet predictable career in grocery retail. But for a man who prided himself on living an engaging and authentic life, he was ready for a new challenge. “Three years ago, I was a decade removed from my high school graduation and realized I needed to make big changes to start seeing change,” said Smith.

For many working professionals, doctoral research offers an opportunity to investigate workplace challenges and develop solutions that can be applied in real-world settings. Two recent University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) graduates did exactly that through research focused on leadership development and artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. Kiosha F. Mitchell, DBA ’12, ’19, ’26 is using findings from her dissertation research to strengthen leadership training programs Kiosha F.

Bridge Program English language learners with UMGC in Asia and OIHF staff at a program event in July 2026. As a prime example, the Bridge Program admits prospective learners in Japan who have prior English experience but lack the proficiency to be admitted as regular university students.

New and relaunched programs expand workforce-aligned pathways for adult learners August 18, 2026

UMGC in Asia learners, staff, and families participate in the Lotus Lantern Festival in Seoul in May 2026. A Japanese cultural showcase hosted by UMGC at Yokota Air Base, near Tokyo, featured geishas and ohayashi musicians. At Yokota, a joint U.S.-Japan air base west of Tokyo, the Japanese Cultural Engagement Club connects UMGC learners with Japanese history and community. The student-led organization hosts virtual and in-person events, as well as opportunities for local service.
