July 15, 2026 Laurie Transou retired from Ford as chief program engineer for the Mustang in 2026 after 30 years at the company. She’s the second of three generations of Ford engineers. Transou oversaw the design and launch of the Ford Mustang, one of the longest continuously produced nameplates in automotive history, from 2023-2026. This included its 60th-anniversary edition. She mentored nearly 100 women automotive engineers and led the Women of Ford product development chapter.

Self-driving cars: near-miss driving data can expedite AV algorithm training
Self-driving cars are safer than human drivers in most routine driving, but preparing them for perilous moments is a long, costly process. Homing in on near misses, rather than crashes, can expedite the process and lead to safer performance. Testing in University of Michigan Engineering’s Mcity Test Facility demonstrated a 90% improvement in a vehicle’s safety performance.
Ehsan Afshari’s research group receives three Best Paper awards at IMS-RFSA 2026
The Ultrafast Nonlinear IC Design Group, led by Professor Ehsan Afshari, received three of six Best Paper awards at the inaugural IEEE MTT-S RF Systems & Applications (IMS-RFSA) Symposium, held in Boston. The IMS conference is the leading conference in the field of microwave technologies. The Ultrafast Nonlinear IC Design Group focuses on the design of high frequency circuits and systems for imaging, bio-sensing, and high data rate communication.

Restoring Michigan Central and many other high-profile Detroit landmarks: Larry Brinker Jr.
July 8, 2026 Larry Brinker Jr. is president and CEO of BRINKER Group, the nation’s largest Black-owned construction contractor, launched by his father in 1989 as a small Pontiac-based firm. BRINKER co-led Michigan Central Station’s $1B renovation, which involved pumping 2.5 million gallons of water from the basement and 3D-printing historic stone details.
