When students got back from spring break, they noticed changes to their dining hall. There was a wall that replaced fan-favorite booths and several soda machines. Natalie Replogle, a freshman studying special education, said, “I came back from spring break and saw the giant wall, and I was like, ‘What's going on?’” The University of Northern Colorado is making changes to Holmes Dining Hall, 22 years after its initial construction.

As the sun begins to set and the finish line appears for the spring semester, there are dozens of things for students to look forward to. The crisp summer breeze, the relief of no homework and the endless list of summer plans. But before they can step off of campus for that three-month stretch of freedom, there is still one more big school event to look forward to. That event is none other than Bear Fest.

University of Northern Colorado students registering for classes are in for a change as President Andy Feinstein’s budget cuts alter operational structures within the advising department. In November, Feinstein’s proposed budget cuts eliminated staff positions and altered many university programs across campus. Among the eliminated staff members were many advisers, which caused staffing shortages in all six UNC advising centers.

University of Northern Colorado students are calling for the university to rid itself of the name and murals of César Chávez, a civil rights icon who is under scrutiny after new allegations emerged of him sexually assaulting multiple women and children. Chávez was a Chicano civil rights activist and co-founder of the National Farm Workers of America, also known as the United Farm Workers of America. He was a key leader in improving working conditions and payment for Chicano workers.

UNC students traveling for spring break. Last week, University of Northern Colorado students took a pause from their studying for spring break. Students who traveled found themselves face-to-face with Transportation Security Administration issues, unpredictable travel times and thoughts about how the current administration is handling gaps in the TSA workforce. “It’s kind of scary, frankly,” UNC senior Conner Craven said.

Greeley Colorado has changed significantly over the course of just a few years. A population boom beginning roughly around the 2010s elevated the city to a new level. With a greater population, it also meant new opportunities to expand and add more enticing attractions to the otherwise plain city. However, the last few years of growth have also highlighted a much less appealing detail of larger cities, and has conjured questions of resource management.

The University of Northern Colorado has established its own generative AI policy, but the university also allows its professors to implement their own policies. In the Monfort College of Business, students need to decide when they should be using AI. “My major is going to consist of a lot of AI use, that is what it’s going to be. I think encouraging it in healthy ways is definitely good.

On the fifth floor of South Hall, University of Northern Colorado student Sarai Sanchez lives in silence with her one suitemate. The silence doesn’t bother Sanchez, and she has enjoyed living in an empty hall since her first weeks in the UNC dorms. Like other Colorado universities, UNC requires most freshmen to live in the dorms and purchase a meal plan.

In 2007, Brian Hapcic attended the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space for the first time. The event is held every four years and showcases the best the world has to offer in the art of scenography, which is the creation of stage design elements, from lighting to sound and beyond. The gathering opened Hapcic’s eyes to the infinite possibilities of his life’s work.

The legend of John Henry is becoming all too real for university students. John Henry, a powerful steel driver, fought against a steam-powered rock drill in a race to build a railroad. John Henry won the race against the machine in a show of the indomitable human spirit and resistance against industrialization, but died from exhaustion as soon as the competition ended. Many university students find themselves living their own version of the story as generative AI usage rises.
