UNK Antelope

With two national champions and eight All-American honors, UNK track and field completed its season at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Emporia, Kansas. The women scored their most points at nationals since 2006, while the men had their best team finish since 2012. With 11 qualifiers (two women, nine men), their 34 points are the second-highest total in program history, next to the 38 they scored 20 years ago.

The UNK golf team closed the season on Thursday with an appearance at the NCAA Division II Championships at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The Lopers returned to the national stage for the second time in school history, competing in a pool of 18 teams during the three-day, 54-hole tournament. Freshman Pella Broms said the national tournament was the team’s end goal throughout the entire season.

The Antelope has grown over the past eight years, and the students working at the newspaper have received professional development in the field of journalism and beyond. The newspaper won several Golden Leaf, College Media Association and Associated College Press awards in the past year. Jenna Heinz, the editor-in-chief of The Antelope, said that working at the newspaper has given her leadership experience.

Earlier this year, the Tyson plant in Lexington closed. It previously employed roughly one-third of the town’s population. Scharff interviewed with The Antelope over Zoom to discuss how he thought the plant closing would affect the music program in Lexington.

Lemus shared how he has seen his players and students camaraderie change since the Tyson plant closure. Did the number of students who went out for soccer this spring change with the Tyson plant closure? No, our numbers have been pretty much the same since I’ve been here in Lexington. I came here in the 2018-19 school year. Soccer continues to be a very popular sport here.

Color, music and the smell of fresh tortillas filled the Ponderosa room in the Nebraskan Student Union last week as United in Dance hosted its final event of the year. The Hispanic Festival, inspired by flower festivals in South America, drew in students and community members with traditional Latin games and folk dances. Senior Sayuli Lopez, president of the organization, gave the opening remarks and began the festival with a tortilla-making event.

Aubrey De Jong Redshirt Freshman, Softball Hit her first collegiate home run for what would prove to be the game-winner against Newman at home.

Everybody has their own toxic traits and being able to recognize those traits is what matters most. Self-awareness is something we all claim to value, until it involves admitting the habits we know are not exactly helping us. The truth is, most college students have at least a few questionable tendencies, and chances are your “toxic trait” looks a lot like someone else’s. So in the spirit of honesty, here are a few of mine.

UNK Athletics had a standout weekend, highlighted by a dominant track and field showing at the Loper Invitational, along with strong performances from golf and softball. Track & Field The UNK track and field teams led the way, winning 11  events at the annual Loper Invitational at Kearney High School. The meet, which featured seven teams, was pushed back a day due to weather, but the Lopers made the most of their home opportunity.

Janice Fronczak wrote her first full-length play in 2001 when she arrived at UNK to teach theater. Nine years later, “Corn Man” premiered at the Miriam Drake Theatre in the Fine Arts Building. The production won Fronczak several awards from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Attending the regional festival was the most impactful experience on her growth as a teacher and director. After 25 years at UNK, Fronczak will retire at the end of the semester.
