Mr. President, Excellencies, Distinguished Members of the Executive Board, Colleagues, It is a pleasure to be with you today. Since we last met - our world has continued its descent into crisis. Armed conflicts, the climate crisis and economic instability have continued to deepen communities’ needs around the world. A quarter of the world’s population currently live in conflict-affected settings, while poverty, inequality and hunger are spreading.

News COPENHAGEN, 9 JUNE 2026 - As conflicts and climate-related natural disasters increase globally, millions of tonnes of debris are generated every year. Without effective management, this debris can delay recovery, increase costs and prolong the suffering of affected people. In the Gaza Strip there are more than 60 million tonnes of rubble: the capacity of nearly 3,000 container ships. On average every person in Gaza today is surrounded by 30 tonnes of rubble.

News The visit to Latin American countries will take place from 10 to 13 June. Jorge Moreira da Silva, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNOPS Executive Director, is scheduled to visit Latin America, in a three-day visit that will take him to Honduras and Mexico.

Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates, and Colleagues, I am pleased to join fellow Executive Heads here today to jointly explore strategic considerations and system-wide perspectives regarding UN80. UNOPS is fully committed to the UN80 Initiative. We firmly believe that the UN is greater than the sum of our parts, and UNOPS is dedicated to ensuring that our collective impact matches the scale and urgency of today’s global challenges. These challenges do not exist in silos.

FF2026 will be organized into three thematic areas, aligned with the shifts outlined in the upcoming WBG FCV Strategy. Additional special topics to be addressed include forced displacement, gender, organized crime and violence, justice, security, and climate, among others. Thematic areas: 1. Jobs and Livelihoods in FCV In FCV environments, sustainable jobs and livelihoods are largely underpinned by small, local enterprises.

When a Ukrainian kindergarten was destroyed during the ongoing war, local children lost a crucial space to learn and play. Now, the restored facility has begun to fill with life again – and is helping a community return to a sense of stability. In the village of Zahaltsi, the local kindergarten was filled with children’s laughter and served as a space for community life. That changed in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Aujourd’hui, l’établissement restauré a commencé a reprendre vie et aide la communauté à retrouver une certaine stabilité. Autrefois, l’école maternelle du village de Zahaltsi était remplie de rires d’enfants et offrait un espace de vie à la communauté.
