The second weekend of October in NCAA women’s hockey provided a first look at how players who are spending one week a month at national team camps in preparation for the Olympics are returning to their teams. Army West Point has announced the addition of Riley McVeigh to the coaching staff as an assistant coach. McVeigh joins the Black Knights after spending two years at Bethel as a goalie coach and assistant coach under a Royals staff led by Chris McKelvie, the twin brother of Army head coach Zach McKelvie. “We’re excited to welcome Riley to our staff,” Zach McKelvie said in a statement.

The United States Collegiate Select hockey team has announced the “First Five” members of its inaugural squad. Aiden Fink (Penn State), Mac Gadowsky (Penn State), Jake Livanavage (North Dakota), Joey Muldowney (Connecticut) and Alex Tracy (Minnesota State) have been selected. The five are all returning AHCA/CCM All-Americans and represent four of the six NCAA men’s hockey conferences.

Western Michigan’s run to the program’s first national championship was nothing short of spectacular for coach Pat Ferschweiller and his team. It provided countless moments of jubilation and celebration, you would suppose, for what likely felt like an endless summer for Broncos fans. But as Western Michigan travels to Ferris State to begin its national title defense, other coaches who have been in Ferschweiler’s position in recent years have cautionary tales to tell.

With 32 first-place votes, Western Michigan remains the top team in this week’s USCHO.com Division I Men’s Hockey Poll. Michigan State, with 11 first-place votes, moves from No. 3 to No. 2, Boston University gets two first-place votes and drops one spot to No. 3, Penn State bags four first-place nods and is up one notch to No. 4, and Denver is down one to sit fifth this week. Maine at (1) Wisconsin After a scoreless first where Maine seemed to be giving Wisconsin all they could handle, the Badgers seemed to find their rhythm as Laila Edwards and Cassie Hall each lit the lamp in the second to make it a 2-0 game. Just 17 seconds into the third, Adéla Šapovalivová scored her first career goal to extend the lead. Vivian Jungels and Edwards each scored to secure the 5-0 win.

The young college hockey season provided fans with its first top 10 upset on Saturday as Michigan Tech head coach Bill Muckalt picked up his first behind the Huskies bench, 5-3, over No. 8 Minnesota. The road victory earned a weekend series split for the Huskies with the Gophers. Michigan Tech spotted the hosts a 3-1 lead in the first on Minnesota goals by Brody Lamb, Tyler Miller and Erik Pahlsson sandwiched around a Tyler Miller strike for Tech. From that point, though, it was all Huskies.
