This spring, she heard yes from seven of them. Macias, who graduated from USF in May of 2024 with a degree in biology, was accepted to seven of the eight medical schools where she interviewed, including Brown and Dartmouth. In the end she chose Johns Hopkins. She’ll start there this fall on a scholarship covering tuition and living expenses. Macias grew up far from Johns Hopkins. She lived in Mexico until she was 8, when her family moved to Springdale, Arkansas.

You earned both your degrees at USF. What drew you back for your master’s? The University of San Francisco offered me something open, grounded, and accessible. I could stay close to home and avoid the added expense of housing, which was important to me and my family. After undergrad, I was working in public radio at the time, jumping from stations like 94.9 to KNBR, and eventually found my way to sports through an unexpected internship with the Giants.

USF’s School of Management Celebrates 100 Years
“For me, personally, the School of Management has really changed the direction of my life,” said Carlos Zapata MSFA ’15. “It came at a point where I was struggling with my career, and I was struggling financially because of the career situation,” he said. “I decided the course of action for a better future was through education.” Today, Zapata is a senior staff member at Twist Bioscience in South San Francisco, where he oversees environmental, social, and governance projects.

Carol Cook was a basketball player and track athlete growing up. Her love of basketball at a young age evolved into a lifelong passion and family tradition.
New Initiative Offers Entrepreneurship to Everybody
“Entrepreneurial skills are just the skills needed to take an idea and make it a reality,” said Johnathan Cromwell, associate professor of entrepreneurship and faculty director of the Entrepreneurship For All Initiative. “This is ultimately an initiative that helps our students have the kind of impact they envision when coming to the University of San Francisco.” The enterprise is a business incubator where students from all majors are welcome, Cromwell said.
Exploring Name, Image, and Likeness Laws
The landscape of college sports changed dramatically in 2021 when the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in NCAA v. Alston that the NCAA was subject to antitrust laws and that its athlete compensation limits violate those laws. The NCAA in turn adopted an NIL policy that allowed student-athletes to profit from their image and likeness with few restrictions.

Ani De Lira Lopez ’26 In the 2023-2024 academic year, the University of San Francisco awarded $79.5 million in need-based scholarships and grants to undergraduate students, with 97% of first-time, first-year students receiving financial aid. Current undergraduate and graduate student at USF, Ani De Lira Lopez ’26, is pursuing a degree in history and a master’s in teaching, part of the university’s distinctive 4+1 undergraduate teacher’s education center (UTEC) program.
USF’s Jonathan Mogbo Headed to the NBA
"Our entire USF basketball family is so proud of Jonathan being selected by the Toronto Raptors," said head coach Chris Gerlufsen. "Getting drafted is a testament to all his hard work and dedication during his time here on the Hilltop. He is a prime example of taking full advantage of his opportunities. We can't wait to root him on at the next level." Mogbo, a sociology major, is the first student-athlete from San Francisco to be drafted into the NBA in 42 years.
