A historic U.S. flag made a stop at USW headquarters on July 1 as part of the National Flag Foundation’s “Flag Sojourn 250.” Before its arrival in Pittsburgh, the flag was on a yearlong journey to 26 overseas U.S. military cemeteries and 10 countries as well as every U.S. territory and state, closing with the 13 original colonies and ending in Washington, D.C., on July 4.

USW leaders in the oil industry reached agreement in February on a new contract that will cover more than 30,000 workers in the oil and petrochemical industry. The national pattern agreement sets wages and benefits and other terms for members of more than 200 USW bargaining units that are part of the National Oil Bargaining Program (NOBP).
(GLOSTER, Miss.) – About 140 workers at Big River Forest Products voted today to join the United Steelworkers (USW), becoming the latest work force in the South to unionize in the fight for better working conditions and stronger communities. The workers serve in a variety of roles, including operator and mechanic, at the 2-year-old sawmill. While the workers fuel the success of the mill with their skill and dedication, management refuses to invest in them.
Staff members of the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives (USFWC) became the newest members of USW Local 9007 this spring when they voted to ratify their first contract. Founded in 2004, the USFWC helps to create, support and sustain worker-owned cooperatives. The staff at the federation joins their fellow Local 9007 members at ICA Group, Palante Technology Cooperative, and Keystone Development Center, all part of the growing co-op sector of the USW.
