Does it perhaps matter whether that earnings stems from a lottery win or from hard work? These are the kinds of questions that the economist Ingvild Almås of the University of Zurich is exploring.

Ig Nobel Prize At yesterday’s Ig Nobel Prize ceremony in Zurich, awards were presented for research that first makes you laugh and then makes you think. Ig Nobelpreis An der gestrigen Verleihung des Ig-Nobelpreises in Zürich wurde Forschung ausgezeichnet, die zuerst zum Lachen und dann zum Nachdenken anregt. Die UZH-Studie «Beweisstück Unterhose» erhielt den Preis in der Kategorie Bodenkunde. Der «echte» Nobelpreisträger Michel Mayor überreicht die Ig-Trophäe an Atlant Bieri, Pia Viviani, Franz Bender von Agroscope und UZH-Professor Marcel van der Heijden (von li nach re).

Public debate then centered not on generating growth but on limiting it – a debate famously sparked by the Club of Rome’s The Limits to Growth and still echoed today. Now, however, fear has shifted: many expect the next generation to be worse off than the last.

(Image: allink/Simon Zangger) The European Research Council (ERC) received a record of 4,807 proposals for Starting Grants in this year’s call. Of these, only 8.8% were awarded funding. A Starting Grant provides up to EUR 1.5 million over a maximum period of five years. Ten projects submitted by UZH researchers received one of the coveted grants. A total of 49 UZH researchers applied, and 23 of them advanced to the second round.

Davon konnten nur 8,8 Prozent bewilligt werden. Ein Starting Grant umfasst bis zu 1,5 Mio. Euro über einen Zeitraum von maximal fünf Jahren.
