Hi Can you guess what the single most important word is in any person’s life? A few years ago, I read Dale Carnegie’s bestseller book, How To Win Friends and Influence People and I highlighted this sentence: “A person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” Names matter. People call me “Victoria” all the time. I know they don’t do it on purpose, but I find it annoying. It makes me feel so small and I always feel awkward correcting people.

This week I wanted to talk about something that hits home for all of us: plagiarism and copyright. A few days ago, fellow writer Andi Bitay, posted a Note on Substack that made me want to pull my hair out. Another ā€œcreatorā€ had shamelessly copied one of her Notes that had gone viral and published it as her own. Word for word, top to bottom, without a single credit or mention, riding the wave of someone elseā€™s hard work.

I donā€™t remember the exact time I first heard the term ā€œportfolio career,ā€ but I remember thinking this is me. For years, even though I have had great jobs (and not so great ones) and have worked for great companies (and not so great ones), I always felt I was leaving a part of me behind.
