The long-running Rocky series over the last two movies has morphed into the Creed series. The third installment of Creed manages to throw in a few curveballs to the main character’s backstory and give him a dramatically deeper antagonist to go up against. There’s a bit too much domestic melodrama which isn’t as engaging as the boxing bits when two former friends face down. But when the movie kicks in for an intense slug fest, it is very riveting.

A film that is “Based on a true story” or, as it has been rewritten lately, “Inspired by true events”, can be a dicey prospect, usually portending some ponderous Oscar bait. As far as the “based on a true story” genre goes, Cocaine Bear is one of the more unique ones. Mostly because it jettisons realism for a madcap, splatter gore horror comedy. It gathers a bundle of different characters and puts them up against a cocaine fuelled killer bear.

In the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe series, there are sometimes movies that set up what is to come. Iron Man 2 did legwork for The Avengers and Age of Ultron set up a lot of Phase 3 of the MCU. Those movies tend to get tagged, somewhat unfairly, as just being ads for the next chunk of Marvel content, but they work on their own. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania features setup although it works as a singular, sci-fi adventure.

You People is a comedy that dips into romance, culture clashes, race relations, in-laws angst, podcasting, loneliness and more. It’s too much for one movie to handle, especially since this is close to two hours with lots and lots of improvisational riffing that starts to feel creaky. Often it will flip from silly to serious as it uses tired conventions of the romantic comedy genre.

Knock at the Cabin is a psychological thriller that is slightly guilty of repeating the same horror moments over and over but it’s still effective. And it cheats slightly at the end with how the characters react to the situation from how they are presented the entire time. Overall, there’s a genuine sense of impending doom that permeates the experience.

Shotgun Wedding is a slapstick action movie that happens to be in a romantic comedy format. It’s not exactly a great or original action movie nor is it a great or original romantic comedy. But it has an endearing madcap energy and is a bit messier than most action romantic comedies tend to be. The character types and relationships are loud and comedic and while there is a threat of deadly danger it’s basically cartoonish violence with a bit more blood splatter and liberal usages of f-bombs.

The Pale Blue Eye basically coasts on thriller moodiness. The abundance of procedurals has made the genre a bit more rote, but this gets bonus points for the 1800 setting and throwing in real-life historical figures. The chilly setting adds a lot of ambiance, it also looks great, has an earnest lead performance, and the creepy moments work. The grand mystery also hinges upon more than a few coincidences which is kind of eye rolling.
