An executive with the Springfield Urban League has been selected as the first executive director of the Sangamon County Mental Health Board. Dr. Tatyana Gardner was formally appointed during the board’s meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Gardner is currently director of health initiatives for the Springfield Urban League, overseeing a variety of community heath programs and grant-based initiatives. She was chosen from a pool of 11 applicants. Gardner begins her new duties on October 12.

Springfield Police added 12 officers to the force with a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday afternoon. The department said 11 of the officers graduated in August from the Macon County Law Enforcement Training Center. One officer is a lateral hire from another department. All 12 new officers are going through additional department-specific training at the Springfield Police Academy before beginning field training with veteran officers.

Early voting and vote-by-mail for the November 3rd general election begins today. In-person voting hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm weekdays on the first floor of the Sangamon County Complex on 9th Street in Springfield through October 23rd. Additional voting hours are on the county website and WMAY.com.
