A 57-year-old St. Joseph man was killed Sunday evening in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 12 near the U.S. 31 Bypass in Bertrand Township. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were dispatched to the crash at about 7:12 p.m. Sunday. Investigators say a 2015 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on U.S. 12 when it sideswiped a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that had just turned east onto U.S. 12 from the northbound U.S. 31 off-ramp.
CSX bridge at St. Joseph Harbor stuck in closed position
Boaters on the St. Joseph River are being advised of delays after the CSX railroad bridge became stuck in the closed position Sunday night. St. Joseph Harbormaster Michael Moran said the problem was reported at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. The bridge, located at mile 0.67 over the St. Joseph River, is unable to open or close because of what CSX has identified as a mechanical failure involving the bridge’s main operating gear.

Van Buren Regional Genealogical Society planning presentation on Civil War nurse from Michigan
The Van Buren Regional Genealogical Society will welcome a guest speaker to the Hartford Public Library next weekend to explore a side of the Civil War that’s often overlooked. Society President Joyce Beedie tells us History Remembered, Incorporated Director Bruce Butgereit will present “In Their Words: Annie Etheridge, Civil War Nurse” on Saturday, July 18. He’ll tell the story of Annie Etheridge, a nurse from Michigan.
State conservation leaders ask Michiganders to look out for spotted lantern fly
An invasive insect is making its way across Michigan, and the state is asking the public for help tracking where it spreads. The spotted lanternfly feeds on a variety of plants, including grapevines, maple trees, and the invasive tree of heaven. Although it isn’t directly harmful to people or pets, the insect can also create sticky, mold-covered outdoor spaces.
Fundraiser planned to support operation of the Coloma Splash Pad
A fundraiser to pay for the ongoing operation of the Norma Jean Somers Splash Pad in Coloma is planned for Sunday, July 19 at the splash pad. Coloma Mayor Marsha Hammond tells us last summer was the splash pad’s first full season at Randall Park, and it’s proven to be exceedingly popular. “It’s wonderful,” Hammond said.

DNR seeking to expand Warren Dunes Natural Area
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is seeking to expand the official boundaries of the Warren Dunes State Park Natural Area. In a filing with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, the DNR says the current boundaries of the natural area no longer reflect reality, and so it’s asking to make some adjustments, expanding the area from about 488 acres to about 600 acres.
Madonna lands 13th UK #1 album with ‘Confessions II’
Madonna, ‘Confessions II,’ (Warner Records) Madonna has landed a new #1 in the U.K. Her latest release, Confessions II, tops the U.K. Official Albums Chart this week, making it her 13th chart-topper. The new #1 makes Madonna the first female artist in the U.K. to have a #1 record in each of the last five decades. She’s also now tied with Elvis Presley for fifth place when it comes to overall U.K. #1 albums. Madonna earned her first #1 album in 1984 with her sophomore release, Like a Virgin.
