Hospitals are currently using about 3,500 more units of blood than usual during what the Red Cross calls the "height of trauma season." Red Cross Medical Director Dr. Courtney Lawrence calls a readily available blood supply the backbone of modern medicine due to its role in lifesaving treatments.
Renaming boulevard for fallen trooper
New Castle County Council voted Tuesday night, July 14, 2026, to rename a street next to Delaware State Police Troop 6 in honor of a slain officer. A portion of Albertson Boulevard in Prices Corner will now be known as 'Corporal Grade One, Matthew "Ty" Snook Way.' Snook was shot to death in December, 2025 while working an extra duty job at the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicle offices in Minquadale.
Price's Run shooting under investigation
Wilmington Police are investigating a shooting Tuesday night, July 14, 2026, in the city's Price's Run neighborhood. Officers responded to the 23-hundred block of North Carter Street just before 9:30 p.m. A 31-year man was found with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. No other information about the shooting was released.
Cecil County drug bust yields 12 pounds of coke

Maryland State Police said an investigation into drug trafficking in Cecil County began in March, 2026, and eventually involved Elkton Police, Delaware State Police, and the FBI's Delaware Violent Crime and Safe Streets Task Force.
MERR Institute monitors rare dolphins off Delmarva coast
LEWES, Del. - The MERR Institute is monitoring two rare dolphins seen off the coast, including what the nonprofit believes to be a leucistic juvenile dolphin and an albino calf. The organization said it has received numerous reports, photos and videos from people who have spotted the animals and is continuing to track their movements. According to the MERR Institute, both dolphins appear to be healthy and are swimming and feeding with their family groups.
Construction continues on major Seaford redevelopment project
SEAFORD, Del. — Construction is continuing on the Nylon Capital Center, a major redevelopment project transforming a former shopping center into a 22-acre campus. Developers say the project is now nearly halfway complete, with crews working on new buildings, renovations and infrastructure throughout the site. Brice Walborn, the project manager with GGA Construction, says the project has taken a sequenced approach as crews work to build new structures and renovate existing buildings.

Lewes man found with over 500 fentanyl pills sentenced to 70 months in prison
LEWES, Del. - Brandon Barnes, a 38-year-old Lewes man, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison on federal drug charges. The U.S. Department of Justice says a guilty plea was secured from Barnes in March 2026, with sentencing scheduled for July 15. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute a mixture and substance containing fentanyl. Prosecutors say the Drug Enforcement Agency investigation into Barnes began in early 2024.
