Rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms will be expected across parts of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley today into tonight. A vigorous disturbance will track into the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley today and tonight bringing with it scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Some of the thunderstorms will have the potential to produce heavy downpours, damaging wind gusts up to 50-60 mph, hail and even a couple of tornadoes.

Tropical Depression Two has organized in the northeastern Gulf, and will likely become the Atlantic’s second named storm this week. Breaking the season’s little more than a month-long drought, Bertha will pack plentiful weather headaches along the Gulf Coast for much of the workweek. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the Florida Panhandle, including Ochlockonee River to the Florida-Alabama border. A watch means conditions are possible in the watch area in the next 36 to 48 hours.

The northern Plains and much of the Carolinas will see the potential for severe thunderstorms today. Strong wind gusts will be a threat in both of these areas, with the northern Plains also seeing the risk of large hail. The thunderstorms in the Carolinas and Georgia will form along a cold front that is slowly heading south into a tropical and very humid airmass.

After a hazy conclusion to the workweek, scattered to numerous severe storms will impact the northeastern quadrant of the nation to start the weekend. A burgeoning low pressure system north of the Great Lakes is pulling a particularly moist airmass up into the Northeast, creating an unstable atmosphere. With the support of upper-level disturbances and a pair of fronts, multiple rounds of scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms and intermittent rain will launch.

Smoke will billow from wildfires in Minnesota and multiple Canadian provinces to much of the East Coast in the coming days. Multiple major wildfires have been scorching across Minnesota as well as the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, only increasing in coverage beneath a high-pressure system that maintains hot and dry weather in the region.

A very humid airmass with its origins from the tropics to the area's south, a series of disturbances aloft and the geography of the region will be the ingredients that come together that will help this rain to fall.

Northern New England and adjacent New York state near Lake Champlain will see the potential for severe thunderstorms today. Strong wind gusts, large hail and even an isolated tornado are all possible in these thunderstorms. These thunderstorms are what some people refer to as forming due to the "ring of fire".

But what are some of these pollutants that can lead to air quality dangers?

As strong, monsoon-season thunderstorms boil up in the Desert Southwest, ingredients for severe thunderstorms align in the Mid-South this afternoon and evening. Today, upper-level disturbances will sink over the Mid-South after revolving over the Lower Midwest yesterday. With the aid of a moist Gulf airmass already settled over the region, conditions will align to enable widely scattered severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and into the evening.

The weekend picks up where the work week left off as multiple cold fronts drift over much of the central and eastern U.S., creating rain and thunderstorm chances. Meanwhile, hot and dry weather prevails in the West. Saturday A stationary front will remain draped over the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. The best chance for rain and thunderstorms will occur along this front from the central/southern High Plains into Tennessee Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
