‘Human error’ stops Brooklin renovation project in its tracks
by Will Robinson Less than a month after almost 300 Brooklin voters flocked to the polls, a clerical error in the town office rendered the positive vote invalid. This halts the $4 million school renovation project before it can begin and throws the 2024-25 school budget process into disarray. “A lot of work on this just went down the tube because someone forgot something along the way,” said School Union 76 Superintendent Dan Ross at a special school board meeting on January 8.

Select board considers bids to build town floats
by Michael Dickerson The Blue Hill Select Board discussed two proposals at the December 27 meeting, submitted by Sparky Clifford and Clifford Nevells, to rebuild four town floats. The four floats will be 20 feet in length and between 12 and 14 feet in width, according to select board member Scott Miller. The bids from Clifford and Nevells were $56,000 and $48,000, respectively.

Severe wind storm causes statewide blackouts
by Moira Sankey and Will Robinson A brutal storm ripped through the entire state on Monday, December 18, into Tuesday, December 19. Hundreds of thousands of residents were left without power statewide. Power company repair, fire department and public works crews worked through the day and night and the next day, clearing trees and fixing downed power lines. According to Versant Power, outages peaked at 96,000 customers, well over 50 percent of the total customers served.
Collins bipartisan group introduce legislation to protect health of commercial fishermen
U.S Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Edward Markey (D-MA) and Dan Sullivan (R-AL) have led a bipartisan group of senators in introducing the Fishing Industry Safety, Health, and Wellness Improvement (FISH Wellness) Act. This legislation aims to build upon the success of the Commercial Fishing Occupational Safety Research & Training Program to better address the range of occupational safety and health risks facing fishermen, including worker fatigue and substance use disorder.
