Mrs. Dorothy Bolton Peek, age 97 of Centre, passed away on August 31, 2026, at Cherokee Village Assisted Living. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Chip Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Noah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the hour of the service at the funeral home.

MENLO– The Tillotson Menlo Charitable Foundation is accepting applications for its 2026 grant cycle. Completed applications must reach Administrative Coordinator Carol Mitchell by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. The foundation will announce grant recipients in December. Foundation Has Awarded More Than $8.4 Million The foundation began in 2005 with a $1 million donation from Tillotson Corporation. Over the following five years, the corporation contributed another $9 million.

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that the original 1977 Star Wars film, as well as the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, are set to debut on IMAX screens in 70mm film in 2027. The original film will be presented in IMAX for the first time ever, whether it be digital or on film, in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

GADSDEN– The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help locating 86-year-old Carol Sherwood. Sherwood is missing from the Ford Valley Road area of Gadsden. According to the Sheriff’s Office, she may be experiencing dementia and may need assistance. Sherwood stands 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds. She has gray hair. Her last known clothing includes a gray shirt and blue sweatpants. In addition, authorities said she may have gotten into a blue vehicle.

MONTGOMERY– Alabama Law Enforcement Agency troopers investigated crashes that killed six people during the four-day Labor Day enforcement period. The number matched the six traffic deaths ALEA recorded during the 2025 Labor Day travel period. This year’s fatal crashes occurred in Baldwin, Cleburne, Colbert, Shelby, and Lauderdale counties. From Friday, Sept. 4, through Monday, Sept. 7, troopers investigated 322 traffic crashes statewide. Those crashes left 107 people injured.

ROME– Drivers should expect lane shifts and intersection closures along Glenn Milner Boulevard beginning Wednesday morning. The Rome Police Department announced the traffic plan ahead of scheduled railroad work. Norfolk Southern will replace track and perform maintenance between Second Avenue and the Rome News-Tribune. Work begins Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7 a.m. Crews will close the inside lanes nearest the railroad tracks. However, the outside lanes will remain open in both directions.

Both Piedmont (3-0) and Collinsville (2-0) hold steady at their No. 4 and No. 7 positions in Class 2A respectively. The latest poll was released early Wednesday morning. Piedmont travels to West End of Walnut Grove (0-2) on Friday, while Collinsville is at Ider (3-0) on Friday.

Staff Reports CENTRE – Sand Rock dropped a pair of volleyball matches on Tuesday at Cherokee County High School. The Lady Wildcats lost to Bremen (Ga.) 19-25, 14-25, then fell to the Lady Warriors 17-25, 19-25. Aubie Camp posted 14 digs and a pair of aces for the Lady Wildcats (4-13). Emma Sipsy and Molly Grace Lay both contributed seven kills. Maddie Clanton collected 24 assists. Addisyn McMichen managed five kills. Taylyn Warren and Alyvia Browder both finished with three kills.

Paityn Walker led the Lady Tigers (5-7) with nine kills, eight digs and a block. Vana Martin posted 21 digs. Cece Davis delivered three kills and three digs.
