VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County families can learn about rip current safety while getting into the Halloween spirit at a free event later this month. Volusia County Beach Safety and Daytona State College will host a Halloween-themed rip current simulator event at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Daytona State College Aquatic Center.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Ballet is teaming up with local organizations for a free event at Lake Eola focused on the connection between movement and mental well-being. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, as part of Miles with Purpose’s “Coast-to-Coast Connection” initiative. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Two Orlando residents became multimillion-dollar lottery winners in June, according to the Florida Lottery. The Florida Lottery said Nathon Brown, 57, of Orlando, claimed a $4 million Mega Millions prize from the June 2 drawing. Brown purchased the winning ticket at the Publix at 12195 S. Orange Blossom Trail. Lottery officials said Brown claimed his prize on June 3 and received a one-time payment of $4 million.

SEATTLE — A Washington state resident charged with conspiracy in one of the worst school shootings in Canada's history has been ordered detained pending further hearings in the case. DES MOINES, Iowa — Republicans were retreating Tuesday from a handful of battleground U.S. House races while Democrats were racing to raise money to boost candidates who seemed like long shots earlier this year.
