JB Pritzker signed 31 new laws on Friday. One includes a controversial measure that allows minors to receive birth control without a parent’s consent. Two summers ago, Shawn Hickey walked into his first day as Galesburg’s football coach and counted 38 kids. This June, 80 showed up — and unlike last year’s summer mirage of 120 that shrank to 60 by kickoff, the coach says these numbers are real. Now he has to get them all through a brand-new state eligibility rule, with the earliest season start in Illinois history bearing down.

Galesburg firefighters rescued a person from a burning home on West Third Street early Tuesday morning. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 863 W. Third St. at 6:47 a.m. Tuesday with all three fire stations and the 12 personnel on duty, according to Fire Chief Randy Hovind. Arriving crews found heavy smoke showing from the eaves and the rear corner of the house, and neighbors told firefighters the home was occupied.
