Pritzker signs new laws on birth control, AI regulations, play-based learning
JB Pritzker signed 31 new laws on Friday. One includes a controversial measure that allows minors to receive birth control without a parent’s consent. Others ban certain ingredients from cosmetics, prohibit school administrators from using AI to evaluate teachers, and expand access to ovarian cancer screenings. Pritzker also signed a bill to conform the state’s property tax laws to the 2023 Tyler v. Hennepin County U.S. Supreme Court decision.

Streaks football: what to know Practice opens Aug. 5, the earliest start in IHSA history, after the state expanded the playoffs. Players must complete 12 days of practice to be eligible for the Aug. 21 opener at Dunlap. The roster has grown from 38 players in 2024 to a consistent 80 this summer. Galesburg is still searching for a Week 4 opponent after Alleman dropped varsity football. A new video board is installed at CBI Bank & Trust Stadium; the home opener is Aug. 28 against Limestone.

Two summers ago, Shawn Hickey walked into his first day as Galesburg’s football coach and counted 38 kids. This June, 80 showed up — and unlike last year’s summer mirage of 120 that shrank to 60 by kickoff, the coach says these numbers are real. Galesburg firefighters rescue resident from burning home on West Third Street
Galesburg firefighters rescued a person from a burning home on West Third Street early Tuesday morning. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 863 W. Third St. at 6:47 a.m. Tuesday with all three fire stations and the 12 personnel on duty, according to Fire Chief Randy Hovind. Arriving crews found heavy smoke showing from the eaves and the rear corner of the house, and neighbors told firefighters the home was occupied.
