In the Underwood some smart middle-distance horses will be looking to add a major to the mantelpiece at the Heath, with the Waterhouse/Bott-trained Sir Delius looking to go back-to-back.

Chloe Wells was the standout performer at Devonport on Wednesday with a riding treble. She opened her account in the first event on the card, a Class 3 handicap over 1150 metres, aboard the Mark Ganderton-trained Glory Mission. The Stratosphere gelding faced the breeze before drawing clear for a soft 1¾-length win over stablemate Thickskinned, who made good ground from the tail.

We flagged last week that the Paul Preusker stable was in a rich vein of form, and Preusker’s fellow McKenzie Creek trainer Holly McKechnie got in on the act last Sunday, completing back-to-back wins with her seven-year-old mare Eishaa ($31). Eishaa finished over the top of her rivals at Bendigo, having taken confidence from her second-up win at Murtoa a fortnight earlier to make it two wins on the bounce, both times under the guidance of red-hot apprentice Shayleigh Ingelse.

Kembla Grange trainer Joseph Ible has his sights on interstate riches for Barrengarry after the four-year-old’s impressive win in the 1400-metre Midway Handicap at Randwick last Saturday. Despite being trapped three wide in running at his first start after a spell, Barrengarry ($5.50) finished powerfully from midfield under Zac Lloyd to win drawing away by a length and a quarter from Vexxy, with favourite Felix Majestic a short half-head away in third place.

Speedy Warrnambool mare Cavalry Girl lost no admirers running a gallant second in last Saturday’s $750,000 Moir Stakes at Sandown. With Craig Williams aboard, the Tom Dabernig-trained mare finished a short neck behind My Gladiola in the 1000-metre Group 1. Dabernig said the four-year-old was brave in defeat. “She was very game,” he said. “I thought she might just hold on and win but My Gladiola was just too strong. “Cavalry Girl has had a great campaign.

Local apprentice Brittany Button kicked off her spring in fine style last weekend, winning on three of her six rides. Button, apprenticed to Gerald Egan at Mansfield, kicked off with a double for Bendigo trainer Brent Stanley at Mildura on Saturday. She opened her account with a narrow win on four-year-old Hanseatic gelding and $3.90 favourite Surprisatic in the Mildura and District Real Estate BM56 over 1008 metres.

Morphettville-based training partners Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle got their spring off to a flying start last Saturday with a double on the Parks track at home and a stakes winner at Sandown. The Parks double saw Richards and Moyle remain level with Phillip and Tommy Stokes — who also trained a double — at the top of the Adelaide premiership. Both stables have six winners from 33 runners at a strike rate of 18.2 per cent.

Warm favourite in the Makybe Diva will be rising star mare Sheza Alibi, a strong-finishing first-up second to champion mare Autumn Glow in last month's Group 1 Winx Stakes. A feature again on the Makybe Diva card is the Archer Stakes (Hotham Handicap), long run on Derby day and offering a golden ticket into the Melbourne Cup.
