Between backyard barbecues, beach vacations, and hiking trails, warmer weather encourages us to spend more time outdoors. But alongside all the summer fun in the sun comes the often-overlooked health risk of insect bites and stings. Many people consider insect bites to be nothing more than an itchy inconvenience. A mosquito bite, a bee sting, or a tick found after a hike may seem like an inevitable part of enjoying nature.

Richard “Dick” Thibeau will be inducted into the USA Hockey 80-Plus Hall of Fame at a ceremony Sept. 26 at Blue Sport Stable in Superior, Colorado. The non-profit senior hockey organization celebrates the passion, dedication, and achievements of hockey players from the United States and Canada. Thibeau, 81, is one of 34 inductees. Thibeau was nominated by Steve Nearman, director of the Great Blizz hockey team.

With the recent announcement that the bids are out for the new Winthrop fire station that will be built on the site of the former Winthrop Middle School (which originally was the site of the first Winthrop High School), the construction of the long-overdue fire station finally is coming into clear focus.

Governor Maura Healey today announced that the Division of Insurance has negotiated down proposed rate increases from seven health insurers, saving Massachusetts residents and businesses a projected $72 million in health care premiums for 2027.

Several city councillors say they are fed up with delays from the DCR for improvements to the Short Beach seawall and adjoining sidewalks. At Monday night’s meeting, the council supported a motion filed by Councillors Joanne McKenna and Jim Mercurio asking for a resolution to the issue.

Cottage Park Yacht Club’s 32nd annual Regatta to benefit Make-A-Wish provides a chance for sailors of all ages to compete for a good cause and the whole community to contribute to a nonprofit that grants wishes for children suffering serious illnesses. The three-day event, Friday, July 31 through Sunday, Aug. 2, provides funds for wishes that range from meeting a famous sports hero to a trip to Disneyland to building a backyard playscape to many others that spring from the mind of a child.

A new ordinance approved by the Winthrop Town Council last week would prohibit the use of motorized scooters and e-bikes in the town’s parks. The prohibition is scheduled to go into effect on Sept. 1, giving the town time to finalize language for signs that will be purchased alerting residents to the new policy in the parks. Councilor-at-Large Kurt Millar said the ordinance came out of the charter and ordinance review committee with input from the police department.

The phrase, “The Next One,” comes from the National Hockey League to describe the exceptional rising stars hoping to match the incredible achievements of Wayne Gretzky, known as “The Great One.” In the music industry, we have found “The Next One,” and he is 20-year-old John Foster, the incredibly talented singer, songwriter and guitar player, who garnered international acclaim as a runner-up on American Idol season 23 in 2025. As it begins to recognize its centennial year, Regis College celebrated its 96th commencement on Saturday, May 9 at the Leader Bank Pavilion, where it awarded 1,036 degrees from associate to doctoral levels including to Melisa Lopez Martinez, of Winthrop, who received a Social Work degree.. With more than 600 nursing students graduating, the degree was once again the highest number awarded among the university's programs amid the local, regional and national nursing shortage.
