Winthrop senior Dom Farrell returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown to highlight the Vikings’ defensive masterpiece that produced a 21-0 victory over Pentucket Regional Friday night in West Newbury. Trailing 15-0, Pentucket was driving late in the third quarter in hopes of making it a one-score game.

Ina Silverstein of Winthrop, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully on September 24. Ina was the dear sister of Edward Silverstein and his wife, Linda. She was the loving aunt of Andrew Silverstein and his wife, Arielle and Scott Silverstein and the great aunt of Caleb and Leo. She also leaves behind her dear friends, Kim Hardy Kennedy and her husband, David Kennedy.

A new era in the Winthrop Police Department begins today (October 1) when newly-appointed Police Chief Steve Rogers assumes the helm of the Winthrop Police Department. Chief Rogers, a lifelong Winthrop resident, has dedicated his career — and his life — to the citizens of our community. He has served in the Winthrop P.D. for more than three decades, starting as a patrolman and then rising in the ranks to the posts of Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Deputy Chief for the past two years.

For Kids Only Afterschool (FKO) is welcoming families back to its Rise & Shine playgroup, a drop-in community playgroup designed for infants, toddlers and young children ages 0–5 and their caregivers. Rise & Shine will resume on Monday, October 5, 2026, at FKO’s Winthrop location at 233 Winthrop Street.

Signs are up in Winthrop’s Ingleside Park alerting residents to the town’s new E-bike and motorized scooter policy that prohibits the vehicles from public parks in Winthrop. At last week’s town council meeting, several councilors noted that there have still been some issues with people riding the electric bikes and scooters in the park, and asked about enforcement of and education about the ordinance.

Julia Adela “Julie” Markakis, age 81, of Winthrop, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, September 25, 2026, at Massachusetts General Hospital. Born in Lynn in 1945, she was the daughter of the late Leonidas and Julia (de La Vega) Markakis. Raised and educated in Lynn, Julie graduated from Lynn English High School in 1963, where the popular teenager became Co-Captain of the cheerleading Team, Queen of the Sr. Prom, and Miss Lynn English High.

Precinct 3 Councilor Joseph Romano proposed an ordinance change at last week’s Winthrop Town Council meeting that he said would increase transparency and provide more information to the public.

Geraldine M. Bennett of Winthrop passed away at the CHA Everett on September 3, 2026. She was 88 years old. Born in Boston on July 14, 1938, to Grace (Costa) and Alexander Fougere. She grew up in East Boston and was a proud graduate of East Boston High School. Geraldine had a talent for creativity and a passion for sharing it with others. She taught ceramics for many years, including at the local senior center, where she enjoyed helping others discover the joy of working with clay.

Continuing its efforts to ensure Massachusetts residents and visitors get the most out of fall in New England, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) today announced the return of its Interactive Fall Foliage Map, which has been updated for the 2026 season. The map depicts foliage conditions across the state, showing where leaves have begun to change, as well as how far they are in the process.

TreeWinthrop (a/k/a as Winthrop Loves Trees & GROW) will lead an effort at Crest Ave Park to clean up its garden beds, create a pollinator garden, seek official Monarch Waystation status, and plant three serviceberry trees. TreeWinthrop.org received permission from Winthrop’s Department of Public Works director and consulted with the tree warden about the project to ensure the plantings support the town’s broader tree-care goals.
