VerifiedTelevision
WLTZ began broadcasting on October 29, 1970, as WYEA-TV, an NBC affiliate owned by Eagle Broadcasting Company, with its studio and transmitter off Buena Vista Road in Columbus, Georgia. Eagle had been granted the license by the Federal Communications Commission in August of 1967 and a building permit in December of 1969. Ground was broken in May of 1970. Construction setbacks due to a strike at antenna manufacturer RCA, delayed the completion of the transmitter. Once on-air, the station’s first newscast was 1st Edition News, weeknights at 5:30pm.
