Sara Matthews, associate professor of Communication Studies and Cultural Studies in Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Arts, has been named a recipient of the inaugural McCall MacBain Leading Educators Award. Since 2021, the McCall MacBain Foundation has awarded full scholarships to exceptional undergraduate students to pursue post-graduate degrees at McGill University.

In schools across Ontario, the rapid rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) is influencing teaching and learning in every classroom from kindergarten to Grade 12. For Faculties of Education, where future teachers are trained, gen AI is not just a technology challenge – it’s a seismic shift. “We’re unique in teacher education,” says Wilfrid Laurier University Professor Julie Mueller. “We’re teaching about AI, we’re teaching with AI, and we’re teaching about how to teach with AI.

Wilfrid Laurier University faculty members are using new federal research infrastructure funding to pursue novel cancer treatments, improve food security for northern Indigenous communities and uncover life-saving information about cardiovascular health. Researchers Holly Fruehwald, Aravindhan Ganesan, Nicolas Rouleau, Heidi Swanson and Jennifer Williams all received grants from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF).

A lot has changed at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Waterloo campus since Milne Oakes (BA ’73) and his wife Mary Lou Oakes (BA ’73) were students during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Laurier was then known as Waterloo Lutheran University and had a student population of roughly 2,000. The original Willison Hall served as the anchor building on campus, housing classrooms, administrative offices and a small chapel. The newly constructed library had only two floors.

A former massage therapist and retail entrepreneur, Monaghan is a lifelong learner who brings a distinct blend of experience, curiosity and people-first leadership to the role. Her 14-year Laurier career includes a prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship and being named a Laurier Teaching Fellow, among many other accolades.
