This medal commemorates the work of the late William Nordberg and is awarded to a scientist who has made a distinguished contribution to the application of space science in a field covered by COSPAR. Since the medal was established in 1988, Prof. WANG Jinsong is the first Chinese scientist to receive this honor. As per COSPAR's long-standing convention, Prof. WANG Jinsong is also granted the naming of a minor planet in recognition of his outstanding contributions to space science.

Geneva, Switzerland (WMO) – El Niño continues to intensify steadily and is expected to dominate global climate patterns in the August-October 2026 season, increasing the likelihood of above-normal temperatures across much of the world and driving significant shifts in rainfall patterns, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

Outlook for Oceanic Drivers for the Next Season For the August–October 2026 (ASO 2026) season, the multi-model ensemble (MME) indicates a rapid development toward strong El Niño conditions. The seasonal average SST anomaly is forecast to reach approximately 2.9°C during ASO 2026, with the intensification trajectory peaking in November. The spread among individual forecast systems remains narrow, reflecting high forecast confidence.
