The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is an American professional basketball league. It is composed of twelve teams, all based in the United States. The league was founded on April 22, 1996, as the women's counterpart to the National Basketball Association (NBA), and league play started in 1997. The regular season is played from May to September, with the All Star game being played midway through the season in July (except in Olympic years) and the WNBA Finals at the end of September until the beginning of October. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to Retire at End of 2026
NEW YORK, Sept. 4, 2026 – Following seven successful years as the first-ever Commissioner of the WNBA, Cathy Engelbert has informed the league of her decision to retire, effective at the end of this year, it was announced today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league’s 30-year history,” said Silver.

The 2026 WNBA season may be on pause, but action hasn’t stopped as nearly a quarter of the league heads to Berlin to battle for gold at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
