Our July Nashville Artist of the Month is Cece Coakley, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter whose music blends indie pop, folk and country-tinged storytelling into a heartfelt, melodic sound. To kick off being Nashville Artist of the Month, Coakley made us a mixtape of the songs shaping her world.

Embedded in the investigation published by the magazine was a search tool that enabled music-makers to see which of their songs are included in four massive digital data sets.

Let Freedom Sing! Music City is one of the ways Nashville is honoring America 250th. The free, two day fest taking place on Friday (July 3) and Saturday (July 4) across multiple blocks in downtown Nashville. With five stages and performances from The All-American Rejects, Boyz II Men, Brothers Osborne, Lauren Daigle, NE-YO, Nick Jonas, along with a fireworks and drone show and performances from more than 30 Nashville artists and the Nashville Symphony.

This week for What Where When-sday we highlight two jazz events. On Thursday (June 25) the Nashville Women in Jazz Redefining the Standards album release show is at Urban Cowboy in East Nashville. Nashville Women in Jazz’s mission is working to create a more equitable jazz scene in Nashville by challenging the hiring norms and increasing visibility for women and underrepresented musicians.

Lizzie No has been watching rather skeptically this year while the Declaration of Independence is held up as the ultimate word on American freedom. “Imagine you’re an enslaved person and you overhear that the people that put you in shackles have written a long letter about their freedom,” she begins. “What standing did the Founding Fathers have to speak about freedom at all?

Kwame Lillard was a Nashville Civil Rights Leader and Freedom Rider who started the  African American Cultural Alliance in 1983 because he wanted a place to promote the positive aspects of African culture through music, history, poetry, food and dance. This Friday (June 19) the organization will host Juneteenth615 at Centennial Park, the same place where Lillard and Matthew Walker integrated the pools in 1961. The free, family-friendly event features food trucks, music and ultimate kids zone.

A recent Sunday afternoon rehearsal for Nashville In Harmony buzzed with the members’ enthusiasm for their upcoming concert. And that excitement came as a relief to Wesley King, the artistic director of this local LGBTQ+ chorus. He’d worried about how they’d take the news that their next program would focus on country music.
