In fact, the first ever concert that I went to was a punk show, seeing Misfits at the House of Blues. Over time, it’s been one of the only genres to always stick with me and never wane on its repetition in my playlists.

Punk music was very popular in Ireland, especially Belfast, which is ruled by the UK so that made sense. Dublin isn’t ruled by the UK, but there was an awesome punk rock pub called The Thomas House. Before I get into The Thomas House, I want to note why I bring up going to Belfast.

by Jesse Hudgins On the heels of ending their latest “Ultimate” line of books, Marvel has announced its follow-up, the “Midnight Universe.” Over the past few years, Marvel has been putting out multiple titles under the revamp of its Ultimate universe, which started in 2000 and ended in 2015 with their Secret Wars event. Though it didn’t last as long—barely three years—the most recent revival of the universe proved to be extremely successful.

by Jesse Hudgins I was a big comic nerd when I was a kid, and over the years, I lost touch with them. In college, though, I got back into them heavily and have been keeping up with them frequently. One book that’s been on my feed is the book Assorted Crisis Events. After reading the entire series released thus far, I consider it to be one of the best comics I’ve ever read.

By Jesse Hudgins For those who don’t know, Black Flag is a legendary punk group that formed in 1976. Over the years, the band has gone through many lineup changes. Many punk legends have come and gone through Black Flag like Keith Morris, Dez Cadena, Ron Reyes, Henry Rollins, Robo, Bill Stevenson, Chuck Biscuits, and the list goes on and on. Most recently, the band has performed with a new lineup organized by original guitarist Greg Ginn that features young 20-year-old musicians.

I make it clear every chance I get, whether it’s through my Ethel-related TikTok reposts, explaining her albums’ lore to my friends, and even talking about her on air from time to time. I’ll even be seeing her live at her Milwaukee concert very soon, so this definitely will not be the last time you hear from me about her.

by Evan Barkman While I was home last weekend, I saw the newly released Super Mario Galaxy movie. Although the movie came out less than two weeks ago to many theaters across the country, there’s been quite a lot of criticism both from critics and audiences. While I enjoyed watching the movie, I have some positive and negative thoughts about the movie and how it’s presented. First, I think that the animation is very impressive.

by Devin Fuentes A core memory of my childhood is playing arcade games, especially the pinball machines. I used to go over to my mom’s best friend’s house and spend plenty of time in the O’Brien’s basement playing pinball. Bill O’Brien had two different pinball machines, and it made babysitting their kids all worth it. My father used to take us to Sluggers in Chicago where they had batting cages and arcade games.

Four years ago, through Alternage, I was introduced to Chicago-based punk band Sweetie. From meeting the band, I found out about Hands Off Our Fest (H.O.O.F), a festival put together by Sweetie’s lead singer, Birdy Vee, celebrating the femmes and thems of the Chicago punk scene. Having attended two H.O.O.Fs, I can say it’s a wonderful addition to the Chicago punk scene. Last year, Sweetie released their album, La Vie en Rouge, which is nothing short of great and shows a great evolution of the band.
