Austal USA’s floating dry dock at its San Diego ship repair facility is fully certified and operational, the company announced Sept. 14. Designed to accommodate small surface combatants and similarly sized vessels, the drydock expands the facility’s capabilities to serve Navy and other customers through Austal’s repair and services business. The drydock has a lifting capacity of 9,000 light tons and measures 531'x154'. Its wingwalls are 13.12', and its maximum draft is 36'.

October 1, 2026 STAPLETON, Ala. — September 23, 2026 — The federal government is pouring money into American shipbuilding at a pace the industry hasn’t seen in decades: roughly $27.2 billion in FY2026 Navy funding, a $650 million contract for up to 474 composite rigid-hull inflatable boats across eight builders, and a separate $3.5 billion vehicle for up to 2,800 aluminum and steel service craft — patrol boats, tugs, barges, drydocks and more.
Saronic breaks ground on $3 billion Brownsville shipyard
Saronic Technologies, Austin, Texas, broke ground Sept. 30 on Port Alpha, a planned shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, that will build autonomous and manned vessels for defense and commercial customers. The project represents more than $3 billion in private investment, according to the company. The initial site covers 835 acres, with an option to expand to nearly 4,400 acres. Saronic expects the yard to create up to 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade.
Metal Shark wins new Vietnam patrol boat contract
Louisiana-based boatbuilder Metal Shark has been awarded a U.S. government contract to build 13 patrol boats for Vietnam, with options for additional vessels. The contract extends the historic, now decade-old maritime rapprochement between Vietnam and the United States. Coming after the company’s successful deliveries of 24 purpose-built 45’ Defiant military patrol boats to the Vietnam Coast Guard between 2017 and 2020, the latest contract expands Metal Shark’s sales in Asia.
SCI appoints new chaplain for Upper Mississippi River region
The Seamen's Church Institute (SCI), which provides a team of chaplains serving mariners and seafarers on the East Coast, Gulf Coast, and inland waterways, has appointed the Rev. Charles Uhlik as its newest "Ministry on the River" chaplain. Based in St. Louis, Uhlik will serve mariners throughout the Upper Mississippi River region. A native of Fremont, Neb., Uhlik began his ministerial service as a Roman Catholic priest and later as a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Trailer Bridge signs three-year tug agreement with Curtin Maritime
Trailer Bridge, Jacksonville, Fla., has signed a three-year agreement with Curtin Maritime, Long Beach, Calif., to provide towing services for its two load-on, load-off barges operating between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Curtin’s Corinne C currently tows one of the barges. The Mabel C is scheduled to join the trade after completing drydock work in mid-October, placing both barges under Curtin’s towing operation. C&C Marine delivers towboat to Southern Devall
Belle Chasse, La.-based C&C Marine and Repair has delivered the Capt. Pete Ciaramitaro, a 2,600-hp inland towboat, to Southern Devall, Sulphur, La. The Capt. Pete Ciaramitaro is the first in a series of six inland towboats C&C Marine is building on spec. According to C&C Marine, the contract for the vessel was signed on July 20, with delivery following just over two months later.
Navy orders 10 Saronic Marauder unmanned vessels
The U.S. Navy has awarded Saronic Technologies, Austin, Texas, an agreement to build 10 Medium Unmanned Surface Vessels (MUSV) based on the company's 180' Marauder autonomous ship. The award is part of a Navy plan to procure 30 MUSVs following completion of Phase I at-sea testing. Galliano Marine Services, Cut Off, La., and HII, Newport News, Va., also received production Other Transaction Authority agreements for 10 vessels each.
Coast Guard expands Cav cybersecurity platform fleetwide
The U.S. Coast Guard has expanded its deployment of Cav’s cybersecurity compliance platform fleetwide following two pilot projects, including one aboard the icebreaker Storis, the company announced Sept. 30. Cav, Falls Church, Va., said its Compliance OS platform reduced the cybersecurity authorization timeline aboard Storis by 90%, shortening a process that would have taken years to weeks.
Iridium shareholders approve Rocket Lab acquisition
Iridium Communications shareholders have approved the company’s proposed acquisition by Rocket Lab, clearing a key step toward a deal expected to close by mid-2027. At a Sept. 24 special meeting, about 99.6% of votes cast favored the merger, representing about 81% of Iridium’s outstanding shares eligible to vote, the companies said. Iridium provides satellite voice and data services used by vessels operating beyond the reach of shore-based communications networks.
