ANUSA General Representative Will Roche is petitioning the ANU to waive tutorial participation requirements or provide online alternatives and reconsider holding in-person exams due to extreme fuel prices. According to Roche, recent skyrocketing petrol prices resulting from the US and Israeli attacks on Iran and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz have resulted in much hardship for off-campus university students.

Today marked an end to the two day delay with the conference finally meeting quorum, following a deal reached between Socialist Alternative (SAlt), Student Unity and Student Left (SL). NUS general secretary Aidan O’Rourke walked out onto the conference floor holding a piece of paper, to Unity and NLS members chanting “ULS” (ie. United Labor Students) together. The deal signed was to make concessions to SAlt’s demands and stop the lock-out preventing them from taking any executive positions.

Another day of NatCon has passed with nothing being discussed on the agenda as quorum still has not been reached. Delegates who remained on the conference floor could not proceed with discussing policy as members of Socialist Alternative (SAlt) and Victorian Unity have pulled quorum for different reasons.

The question that any student journalist seeks to answer is “what happens at the NUS National Conference (or Natcon)?” This year, at least on its first day, nothing happened at Natcon. This is not normally the case. The conference usually starts late and there is usually some item of policy or action to report. Alas: no. In an unexpected shakeup, the conference did not start at all. The standing orders unadopted.

The Kambri location of the Harry Hartog bookstore, the ANU’s primary bookstore since the opening of Kambri in 2019, has closed permanently. As of December 8, a sign on the shop’s front says the store would reopen January 15. However, the shop’s fitout has been removed and a source told Woroni of a meeting where staff were told that the store would be closed due to “financial difficulties”.

For those still floating around campus, or those unfortunate few with friends involved in student politics, you may hear some whispers going around amongst student politicians. You may hear the words “Unity punch”, “headkicker”, “trot” and “NatCon” discussed in hushed tones. What does it all mean? Well, it’s the most wonderful time of year for stupol tragics, as the NUS National Conference is right around the corner.

My friend was lying nude in the bath as we swiped through Hinge, a glass of white wine cool in my palm. Just like your grandpa who collected stamps, your neighbour who collects novelty bottle tops or your cousin who’s really into Pokémon, I have a penchant for hoarding. But one of my favourite pastimes of late has been collecting CDs. This first began as a way to expand the sparse remnants I inherited of my mum’s once-vast CD treasure-trove, and as a portable alternative to the vinyl collection I started back in high school, once I moved here for university.
