The Berrien County Health Department is getting ready to unveil its newly renovated Niles office with a ribbon cutting and open house set for this month. Berrien County Health Officer Guy Miller tells us $743,000 in state grant funding has helped make the work possible at the South County Building at 1205 North Front Street. “We are increasing the size of our footprint,” Miller said. “We’re going to have seven clinic rooms down there.
The St. Joseph Township Board of Trustees has indicated its support for an eventual tax increment financing plan for a new 144-unit apartment complex proposed at 3150 Niles Road. The board this past week voted to begin the brownfield process with the project’s developers and the Berrien County Brownfield Authority, although this does not mean the TIF for the development near the Blue Roof Church is yet approved.

Benton Harbor City Commissioners have approved a resolution of support for the creation of a new countywide public transportation authority. The move toward the countywide authority stems out of a Michigan Department of Transportation letter to Berrien County this year saying the agency plans to cut off funding for the Twin Cities Area Transportation Authority and its Dial A Ride service in October.

The Village of Stevensville and the Lincoln Township Public Library are teaming up for a public art contest to help spread a message about safety. Stevensville Village Manager Kacey Dominguez tells us they’re launching a campaign called Slow Down, Stevensville next month to promote safe driving. “The biggest feedback we get from residents are concerns about downtown speeds and also in some of the residential streets,” Dominguez said.
The YMCA of Greater Michiana is planning its 15th annual Race for YMCA 5K/10K for Saturday, July 18 in St. Joseph. YMCA Race Director Jill Haboush tells us the event raises money for YMCA programs and scholarships and typically attracts around 350 to 400 runners. She says those who take part can choose to do the 5K or the 10K, or they can just take a relaxing walk. “It’s a beautiful course,” Haboosh said. “We start down in St. Joe at the Margaret B.
The next Berrien County Land Auction will be on August 6 and once again online only. Each year, the Berrien County Treasurer’s office auctions off excess properties seized via the tax foreclosure process, often with starting bids in the hundreds of dollars. Treasurer Shelly Weich tells us the auction next month will feature 128 properties. “They are spread across all of Berrien County, all across,” Weich said. “Amajority of them, of course, are in your lower income municipalities.
Coming up on Friday, July 17 in Dowagiac is Southwestern Michigan College’s annual Steve’s Run. The event, now in its 52nd year, is expected to attract hundreds of participants who will take part in their choice of a 5K, a 10K, or a Family Fun Run. SMC Manager of Development Emily Schrock tells us Steve’s Run is a tradition in the community that was renamed in honor of SMC graduate Steven Briegel in 1992, two years after his death.
An invasive insect is making its way across Michigan, and the state is asking the public for help tracking where it spreads. The spotted lanternfly feeds on a variety of plants, including grapevines, maple trees, and the invasive tree of heaven. Although it isn’t directly harmful to people or pets, the insect can also create sticky, mold-covered outdoor spaces.
