Man dead in New Haven shooting
New Haven, Conn./WTIC Radio - One person is dead in a shooting in New Haven. Police were dispatched to the 100-block of Derby Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday. That's where they found the man outside an apartment building. The victim is a 42-year-old male, say police. There's no word yet on suspects or a motive for the shooting.
US aircraft carrier arrives in Middle East, relieving long-deployed USS Lincoln
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Asia-based USS George Washington aircraft carrier is now operating in the Middle East, the U.S. military said Thursday, relieving a long-deployed carrier following reports of mental health challenges and supply shortages aboard while it was supporting the Iran war. U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East, said on social media that the carrier arrived in the region Wednesday.
Two killed in Tolland crash involving dump truck
Connecticut State Police report two women from out-of-state are dead in a crash that closed I-84 Westbound in Tolland on Wednesday night. It was around 10:40 p.m. when Paige Cooke, 28, of Manchester, New Hampshire, was driving a 2026 Kia Sportage that had gotten too close to the rear of a dump truck on I-84 Westbound in Tolland, near Exit 68. She crashed into the back of the big rig and was killed along with her passenger, identified as Kristina Murphy, 28, of Wimington, Massachusetts.
Student charges, grabs teacher at Manson Youth Institution
Connecticut State Police are investigating an incident in which a student charged toward and grabbed a teacher at the Manson Youth Institution in Cheshire. The Connecticut Department of Correction reports the incident happened during a classroom instruction on Tuesday. Staff was able to bring the student under control and removed from the classroom. There were no reported injuries to the teacher, the student, or responding staff.
US agency under scrutiny after watchdog warns of forced labor in Dominican Republic
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection faced scrutiny Thursday after a watchdog group warned that forced labor persists on sugarcane fields in the Dominican Republic, which exports large amounts of sugar and other products to the U.S. In 2022, the federal agency had imposed a ban on imports of sugar and other products made by Central Romana Corporation, Ltd., accusing the company of isolating workers, withholding wages and fostering abusive working and living conditions.
North Korea fires a suspected missile toward the sea, Japan says
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea launched a suspected ballistic missile toward the sea on Thursday, Japan said, a day after North Korea shrugged off a U.S. decision to scale back military drills with South Korea in an apparent bid to resume diplomacy. The Japanese prime minister's office said it detected the suspected launch but gave no further details. South Korean media, citing the military, reported that North Korea fired an unidentified projectile off the North’s east coast.
Prince Harry and Meghan are returning to the UK with their children, British newspaper says
LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, have decided to return to the United Kingdom, but they won’t resume their roles as working members of the royal family, British news media reported late Wednesday. The couple's children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have already enrolled at British schools and will start classes in September, according to the Daily Telegraph, which broke the story.
Fudd to miss rest of WNBA season
Dallas, TX/WTIC Radio - Former UConn great and Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd will miss the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season. In a press release, the team says the 23-year-old will undergo a procedure to address right knee soreness. Fudd has had ACL surgery on the knee twice before. She'll return to Connecticut for this current surgery. Fudd was selected by Dallas with the top pick in the 2026 draft. In 30 games, she's averaged 13.1 ppg and leads all rookies in steals average.
