If you’ve spent any time in online wellness and mental health spaces, you've likely heard the phrase, “You don’t owe anyone anything". This claim is usually accompanied with a long list of social graces individuals are exempted from; you don’t owe anyone an explanation, respect or closure. You don’t have to justify your boundaries or employ effort to maintain your relationships. People are not entitled to your time. The advice usually takes a gentle, therapizing tone; you need to prioritize you.
New Age Music: Aligning Your Vibrational Frequency
Among the hundreds of microgenres that sprung up from the 1960s-1970s, perhaps none are so undefined as the vague “New Age music”. Central to and closely aligned with the spiritual movement of the same name, New Age records filled stores throughout California and played over the speakers of yoga studios for generations. It’s easy to imagine it. You hear twinkly, gentle synthesizers, possibly the sound of the ocean or nature, and even a guru guiding you in soft meditation.
Reflecting on my Time in the French Alps
This study abroad trip through the School of Journalism and Mass Communications was the best, most eye-opening experience I’ve ever taken part in. During my time in Switzerland and France, I grew as an individual and learned so much about different cultures and people. I was privileged to meet and talk with locals about their experiences in a ski town while trying to better understand the effects of climate change in the region.
Mari's Looks of the Week
Once again, there was a great array of outfits, but there were a couple that stood out amongst the others. Through this blog, which I will try to do bi-weekly, I want to showcase my style and show that you don’t need a lot of money or really busy clothing pieces to look good! Also, pro-tip number one, if you have accessories, wear them; you have no idea how much personality they add to an outfit and can really be the staple in any ensemble.
Radio Memories, Vol. 36
Transition to IT When I arrived at SCETV, the accounting and payroll department operated a Burroughs mini-computer to manage the books. There was no computer system in the engineering department, but we were in the planning stages for our Instructional Television Fixed Service(ITFS) system. ITFS is a microwave system that is used to deliver instructional television material to every public school in the state.
Performative Males and Their Impact On Physical Media Consumption
One of the newest popular saying is “performative male:" tote bag over the shoulder, matcha latte in hand and most important a pair of wired earbuds along with a small collection of vinyl records or CD’s. A key indicator of a Performative Male is their insistence to only listen to physical media, which has been fueling the fire of the stereotype. Yet, it marks a much larger move from digital streaming back to physical media on a larger scale.
The Two Song Playlists
I really like looking into what my friends are listening to, it feels weird to say I stalk my friends' Spotify accounts but it has basically become a weekly habit for me. It’s how I tend to find new artists and albums I haven’t heard before, plus I like seeing what dumb names people have for their playlists.
Florida Man in the Woods: Grayson Highlands
Away from the studio, far up in the Virginia mountains, there are herds of wild ponies and long-horn cattle roaming the Grayson Highlands. For Labor Day weekend, my girlfriend and I backpacked up to Mt. Rogers to see these animals for ourselves. I had been waiting to take the 4-hour drive from Columbia to the state park for months now and was finally able to book a reservation. It’s a beautiful, but relatively small park that connects to the Appalachian Trail.
It’s Time to Replace “2001”
Alright, hear me out. “2001” has been the entrance song for the football team ever since it first debuted in 1983. It’s iconic. It starts off slow and builds to an exciting climax. The curtains drop around Cocky, the smoke machines go off, the team takes the field in cinematic fashion. Some have called it the greatest entrance in college football. But after 42 years, it’s time for some change. We need a song to rally around that is immediately recognizable.
Concert Memories: Babe Rainbow, Asheville 2019
June 18, 2019, I hit the road for Asheville, NC, to see my new favorite band play live for the first time. I heard their song Peace Blossom Boogy a year earlier and fell in love with them instantly. Many of my musical interests have changed with age, but if you listen to my show, The Far Out Hour, you know that Babe Rainbow remains my favorite band to this day. Babe Rainbow is an Australian group out of Byron Bay, and at the time did not have nearly the following they have today.
