Over the years, publishers and developers have announced ambitious VR projects based on some of gaming and entertainment’s biggest names. Some were cancelled before they were ever shown publicly. Others disappeared after years of development, sometimes after playable builds already existed. But all of them represent VR projects that we’ll never get to play.

Since consumer VR began in earnest in 2016, developers have experimented with established franchises, enormous open worlds, licensed properties and entirely new forms of interaction. Some of those experiments worked brilliantly. Others demonstrated just how easy it is to take a promising concept and turn it into a disappointing VR game.

While the vanilla version remains one of the biggest open-world games available in VR, it doesn’t always feel like a game that was designed specifically for the medium. The player has no proper visible body, weapon handling can be awkward and menus were designed primarily for a traditional gamepad.

The company embraced VR during the first major wave of consumer headsets, bringing some of its biggest franchises to virtual reality with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR. It also experimented with shorter VR-specific projects based on DOOM, Wolfenstein and Prey. Bethesda’s official VR output has largely stopped, but that hasn’t ended the story.

Both mediums are built around putting audiences into extraordinary worlds, whether that’s Gotham City, New York during a zombie apocalypse or a universe filled with superheroes. VR takes that concept a step further, allowing players to actually step into the role of their favourite characters rather than simply watching them on a screen.

Unlike some licensed franchises that have received one VR game and disappeared, The Walking Dead has been represented by multiple developers and different interpretations of the universe.

The franchise has always revolved around equipment that feels made for VR: Proton Packs, particle throwers, PKE Meters, ghost traps and, of course, the ability to physically point a Proton Wand at a supernatural entity. There have been several attempts to create a Ghostbusters VR experience, from short promotional experiences and location-based attractions to a full multiplayer VR game for Meta Quest and PSVR2.

While the vanilla version of Skyrim VR is perfectly playable, it doesn’t always feel like a game designed specifically for VR. The player has no visible body, interactions can feel basic, and navigating menus with motion controllers isn’t always particularly intuitive.
