HAMLET — Amtrak, NCDOT and local leaders celebrated the completion of a $3.2 million accessibility improvement project at Hamlet Station with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning. The improvements include two accessible boarding platforms, pathways, lighting, signage and safety features.

ELLERBE — The Rankin Museum of American Heritage hosted its annual fossil fair at the flume Saturday, bringing 59 children together to dig for fossils and discover treasures. “We’ve been doing the annual fossil fair for close to 20 years now,” said Rankin Museum President and Chairman of the Board of Directors Brett Webb.

Oct. 1 At 4:09 p.m., Deputy Mark E. Owens responded to Cliff Street in Rockingham after a report of an individual stealing items outside a yard. According to the crime report, the stolen items included camo overalls, a white suitcase, 8 feet of copper wire, and a jumper cable, valued at $160. The case was closed by means other than arrest. Oct. 2 At 1:54 p.m., Deputy Austin M. Hart responded to Airport Road in Rockingham following a report of a subject cutting open a screen porch, valued at $1,000.

HAMLET — The Hamlet Senior Center invites the community to join them next week for two special events celebrating local veterans and bringing people together for fun, fellowship, and community resources. Quilts of Valor — Honoring Our Veterans is Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 12 p.m. at The Hamlet Senior Center, 102 Veterans Drive, in Hamlet. The Sandhills Quilters Guild will present Quilts of Valor as an expression of appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who have served the country.

HAMLET — The 2026 Richmond County Veterans Resources & Hiring Event was held at the RCC Cole Auditorium & Community Center on Sept. 5. This year’s event was the largest of its three years running. The event was very well attended and enjoyed by vendors and guests. Guest Von Capel, a local vocalist, gave an excellent performance of the National Anthem during the Opening Ceremony.

Sept. 25 At 10:34 a.m., Lt. Robin C. Smith responded to Bostick BP in Hoffman following a report of misdemeanor larceny. According to the crime report, the individual took goods valued at $45. HAMLET — A Hamlet woman was arrested Sept. 24 following a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office investigation into allegations of obtaining property by false pretenses and larceny. Sheriff Mark Gulledge reported that Linda Gail Vuncannon, 47, was arrested and charged with felony obtaining property by false pretenses and misdemeanor larceny. The Sheriff’s Office began investigating the allegations in November 2023.

HAMLET — A Hamlet man was arrested Sept. 24 following an investigation into an alleged kidnapping that began in August, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Monteise Lonvonte Hubbard, 18, was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, kidnapping, assault on a female and injury to real property, according to a media release by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
