In Their Own Words: MacDougall's Favorite Muck Rack Features
Media Research and Search
When I came to MacDougall, I noticed that many of my colleagues who were using legacy PR software were saving media lists to their computers, rather than using the software functionally. Since I used Muck Rack at a former job, I told my team about the platform and they were very excited. We’ve been using Muck Rack ever since.
With Muck Rack, we can easily research and gather intelligence about journalists to see what they’ve written about recently. We do a lot of briefing sheets to prepare clients for media interviews, and Muck Rack is helpful in gathering that information.
Muck Rack gives us tons of insight into what matters to a journalist, what annoys them and how they want PR professionals to interact with them.
Muck Rack Alerts
I schedule Muck Rack Alerts for company and executive names for our clients, the spaces they work in and specific program names to track coverage and conversations around those topics.
I have a ton of Alerts set up for industry awareness on specific topics. I regularly feed these Alerts into a Coverage Report to show clients both media mentions and industry coverage.
Clients want to be included in trend pieces about the industry and learn how their competitors are being portrayed in the media, and Alerts helps me stay on top of that information.

Coverage Reports and Comparisons
My favorite feature of Muck Rack is the Coverage Report option to export stories into a list of article headlines and media outlets linked to the article. It’s a fast way to show the client what’s being discussed both in coverage and on Twitter in real time as a story unfolds.
Muck Rack lets me quickly export coverage insights around a client or topic in a period of time via a few clicks. I’m able to see which journalists are sharing a link to coverage, which helps inform future outreach strategy. It saves me hours of search and compilation time that it would otherwise take to manually assemble coverage reports, which lets me send the client insights faster, especially in a crisis communication situation where time matters. I’m able to use the time saved focusing on more strategic work.
This was specifically helpful in a case where a client was mentioned in a context that could be potentially problematic. We were able to track each journalist who tweeted the article to help speculate what coverage or reporter questions we could face that day or later in the week. That intelligence gives us the leg up on manual media monitoring and feels more seamless than other ways of showing up-to-date coverage on a continual basis throughout a crisis communications scenario.
I’ve also used Coverage Comparisons to show a client how much press their company’s launch received as compared to one of their competitors. It was easy to build the report and compare the success of the two launches.
