From Casey Hudson
I’m incredibly fortunate to have had a career where I’ve been able to work with brilliantly talented people, create entire worlds from our imaginations, and see them being enjoyed by millions of people around the world. And now, after nearly 20 years of work at BioWare, I’ve made the decision to retire from the studio and make way for the next generation of studio leaders. It’s not an easy decision to make, and big changes like this always come with a certain degree of sadness.
Happy N7 Day!
It’s tough keeping a big secret (and we really struggled to keep this one a surprise) but now it’s official: today we announced the Mass Effect Legendary Edition! We’ve heard (for years!) your requests for a Mass Effect remaster, so we’re super happy to finally reveal that we’ve been working on a remastered edition of the Mass Effect trilogy.
Anthem Update
Hey everyone! One year ago, we were preparing to launch Anthem – a game that represented a big leap into new territory for us as a studio. It was an exhilarating and terrifying experience to go out to the world with something new and different, and we are grateful to all the players who have come along with us on the journey. It has been a thrill for us to see the creativity of our players in designing customized Javelins, and watching them master Anthem’s flying and fighting gameplay.
September Update
Humans! It’s been a super busy summer at the studio, but I wanted to get a note out to share some of the things we’ve been up to. Anthem Over the last few weeks we’ve been ramping up our Cataclysm events in Anthem – a season-long event with new arenas, enemies, challenges, and rewards.
Anthem - Post Launch Update
Whew. How’s everyone doing out there? It’s been a wild ride these last few weeks. On the one hand it’s been a rougher launch than expected. But then as I think back we also knew that big new online games tend to hit some kind of problem once they go live, so as much as we tested and prepared to make sure everything was ready, we were also ready for the possibility that unexpected issues might arise at launch. And we continue to be committed to responding to them.
One Month To Go
Well folks, this is it! It was a little over 6 years ago that we first started working on Anthem, and we’re down to exactly one month left until launch. Back in 2012 when we first conceived of Anthem (then codenamed DYLAN), we wanted to create a whole new fictional universe, full of BioWare quality story and character.
November Update
Things are always busy at a game development studio, especially when we’re finishing a game. A few years back, I toured a friend around the office as we were finalizing a game, and he said it was like being on a submarine – the tangible energy of professionals doing their jobs with intensity and purpose. As we approach the release of Anthem, it’s starting to feel like that again… The Crew of the USS BioWare First, Anthem.
Anthem Hits Alpha!
It was 20 years ago when I joined BioWare – September 8, 1998. I had just finished my degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta and found out through a local TV show that there was a videogame studio right here in Edmonton. I spent the summer talking with the founders, Greg and Ray, about joining BioWare as a Technical Artist, and they offered me a job. Back then we were a small independent studio. Under 50 people.
Mid-Summer Update
It’s been a busy summer. We kicked it off by heading out to LA for EA PLAY and E3 in June. After the press conference, we showed Anthem in a series of theatre demos running live in front of audiences for the very first time. After a tremendous effort by the team push to get the game looking and playing great, it was awesome to see the team rewarded with cheers and applause from the crowds.
Creating Worlds: The Future of BioWare
Fellow humans. Welcome to Part 2 of a 1200-part monthly blog series, where I’ll cover BioWare’s evolution from videogame studio to post-human AI hivemind. Today I want to talk about our vision for BioWare. Videogames are a unique medium. The only thing that stays the same is that they are constantly evolving. Many of the things we love about games now were not possible a few years ago.
Studio Update from Casey Hudson
Humans! It’s going to be an exciting year. There’s so much going on that I wanted to set up a blog where I can share some thoughts and news with you directly. This is the first entry in a series where I’d like to talk about our vision for BioWare, what that means for our upcoming titles, and share some stories about development as we head towards the launch of Anthem. I started at BioWare 20 years ago.
Coming Home
From Casey Hudson, Incoming General Manager of BioWare Almost twenty years ago, I decided to apply for a job as a technical artist at a local video game company in Edmonton. Young, and fresh out of University, I’m not sure what I expected it to lead to. But it was the beginning of a career full of experiences and shared accomplishments I never could have dreamed of. So when I left BioWare three years ago, it was the most difficult decision of my career.
