(2014) Gift Guide: Wood-themed tech gifts for Dad

Seattle Post-Intelligencer — Dads try to stay handsome, and their technology should, too. Items that have a blend of technology and wood can look more exquisite than plastic or metal when included in the construction correctly. I found three noteworthy products sure to complete dad's stylish ensemble of personal technology:

(2014) Lykke Li hauntingly lovelorn on 'I Never Learn'

Yahoo — "I Never Learn," Lykke Li (Atlantic) Sweden's Lykke Li delivers a full fusion of deep, soul-searching lyrics on "I Never Learn," her third studio album and an artistic zenith for this talented singer. "Love Me Like I'm Not Made of Stone" is a minimalist guitar-and-vocals-only track. Li's voice strains in all the right places and pleads for love in others, meshing nicely into a raw display of emotion. The title track carries more production sheen, but retains an authentic feel as Li sings about falling too deeply in love. There are no weak songs here, and the best comes on "No Rest for the Wicked."

Asbury Park Press — Error on line 91 position 6: 'undefined' is null or not an object Full-bodied cameras known as SLRs have long been able to shoot high-definition video besides still images. But when budding filmmakers use them, production results vary. It's not just the level of talent, but the additional gear available for the job. Fortunately, accessories designed specifically for shooting video with SLRs have become much more affordable. I've had a lot of experience with accessories over the years in my work as a multimedia journalist for The Associated Press. My job entails shooting a blend of video and photos on assignment.

(2013) Music review: Selena Gomez mundane on 'Stars Dance'

Phliadelphia Inquirer — Latest Entertainment Stories: Posted: Tuesday, July 23, 2013, 1:13 PM Selena Gomez, "Stars Dance" (Hollywood Records) Selena Gomez has gone into a studio and recorded her new album "Stars Dance," which consists of 11 pop songs she didn't pen herself backed by instruments she isn't playing. It might be fun for the causal young summertime listener. But it begs the important question: Why bother? Artistically, there's very little Selena Gomez here. This is merely the veneer of Selena Gomez, the look and feel of the pop starlet set atop a middling musical effort.

Washington Examiner — This CD cover image released by Republic shows New Orleans, by PJ Morton. (Republic/Associated Press ) "New Orleans," PJ Morton (Young Money Entertainment) PJ Morton's major label debut, "New Orleans," offers an introspective take on his life and internal desire to return to the roots of the music that made him happy years ago. To that end Morton has made the album he set out to make. Still, it falls short in terms of songwriting and depth. Tracks featuring Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and the legendary Stevie Wonder offer a little bit of zest to an otherwise middling R&B album.

It's old hat by now to carry around thousands of songs in your hip pocket, whether on an iPod or a smartphone. But there's been a price for portability. You are listening to your favorite music delivered only after a host of technology has diminished the resolution of the audio, by necessity, so that it can exist in a small digital file and make its way to your ears.

(2012) Review: Carly Rae Jepsen's album 'Kiss' is sweet | The Jakarta Post

The Jakarta Post — Carly Rae Jepsen, "Kiss" (604/Schoolboy/Interscope Records) The challenge for Carly Rae Jepsen following the monster success of "Call Me Maybe" — arguably 2012's biggest pop culture moment — was to steer clear of one-hit wonder status. She did that with another pop smash, the anthem "Good Time," and Jepsen shows she has even more hits on her second album, "Kiss." The Canadian singer, brought to our attention by country-mate Justin Bieber, delivers what fans are probably looking for with the help of Max Martin, Toby Gad and others: More effervescent pop, unencumbered by a plot too thick or societal issues too weighty. Bass lines and hand claps, please and thank you. ...

Boston Globe — SAN FRANCISCO - Days after the end of World War II, an American soldier entering the wreckage of Adolf Hitler's mountain stronghold found that fierce Allied bombing had left the "Eagle's Nest" in ruins. Hitler was dead, and other soldiers had already looted the inside of his private residence, even stripping the leather from furniture. Nearly everything of value was gone - except for the Führer's globe. "Literally, the place is all bombed out and here this globe is sitting there on the desk," said John Barsamian, now 91.

Washington Post — SAN FRANCISCO -- After hearing Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld dress down the media at Pentagon press briefings, two San Francisco musicians came to an inevitable conclusion: His words simply had to be set to chamber music. So they've taken Rumsfeld's explanations of world affairs and set them to airy classical compositions. "The Poetry of Donald Rumsfeld and Other Fresh American Songs" includes "The Unknown" from Rumsfeld's Feb. 12, 2002, briefing on the situation in Iraq: "As we know, "There are known knowns. "There are things we know we know. "We also know there are known unknowns."

(2000) Nation & World | Napster must halt swapping of songs | Seattle Times Newspaper

Seattle Times — SAN FRANCISCO - Napster's free Internet music-swapping experiment was imperiled yesterday by a federal court's decision that it must halt what millions have come to enjoy: the sharing of copyrighted recordings. Although Napster vowed to fight the ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals - and its backer Bertelsmann vowed continued support - the music-sharing free-for-all via Napster may last only a few more weeks. Ruling in favor of the music industry, the three-judge panel found that "Napster has knowledge, both actual and constructive, of direct infringement" of copyrights. The industry says nearly 90 percent of the music traded via Napster's servers is pirated.
