Abstract No. 550 Understanding the Margins: Evaluation of Microwave Ablations Changes after Transarterial Embolization Utilizing Perfused Ex Vivo Human Kidneys
The combination of microwave ablation (MWA) and transarterial microsphere embolization (TAE) has been utilized to treat large renal tumors. This project aims to investigate the differences in size and shape of renal MWA with and without TAE utilizing a novel ex vivo human model.
Microwave ablation (MWA) of central renal tumors poses a risk to the renal collecting system. Limited data is available on probe orientation and collecting system injury for MWA. We aim to investigate the effects of probe orientation on renal collecting system injury in a perfused ex vivo porcine model.
Paradoxical air embolisms are a rare but high mortality complication of percutaneous lung biopsies. Our previous 2021 air embolism model simulated air introduction during biopsy needle exchange in water. This updated model improves upon the physiologic accuracy by employing a xanthan-gum/glycerin/water fluid with the same viscosity as blood to compare the effectiveness of a water seal technique to a thumb seal technique during stylet-biopsy needle exchange in percutaneous lung biopsies.
PATIENT ADVOCACY AND CHANGING PARADIGM IN DRUG ACCESS
In the process of drug development and drug approval, the pharmaceutical industry is challenged with increasing cost constraints, a growing need for real-world evidence and heavier regulatory scrutiny. Patient advocacy groups can be a valuable partner to the pharmaceutical industry in speeding up drug access. Patient advocates possess practical rather than purely scientific knowledge that is valuable for both drug development and drug approval.
