Fundamental constants from photon-photon scattering in three-beam collisions
Direct measurement of the elastic scattering of real photons on an electromagnetic field would allow the fundamental low-energy constants of quantum electrodynamics to be experimentally determined. We show that scenarios involving the collision of three laser beams have several advantages over conventional two-beam scenarios.
Self-absorption of synchrotron radiation in a laser-irradiated plasma
Radiation emission from accelerated electrons is a ubiquitous feature of regions of strong electromagnetic field. In astrophysical environments,11. A. K. Harding and D. Large-diameter total hip arthroplasty modular heads require greater assembly forces for initial stability
Article focus To evaluate whether the initial connection strength of modular total hip arthroplasty heads is influenced by the size of the head used; To investigate why the observed differences occur. Key messages The larger head size used in our study (36 mm) produced lower connection strengths than the smaller head size (28 mm) for the same assembly forces; The increased rigidity of the larger diameter heads is the reason for the reduction in initial connection strength.
The effect of plate design, bridging span, and fracture healing on the performance of high tibial osteotomy plates
Article focus The influence of working length when using different opening wedge designs of high tibial osteotomy (HTO) plates. The influence of healing on HTO plate stress reduction when using different plate designs. Key messages Larger bridging spans in opening wedge HTO increase interfragmentary movement (IFM) without substantially increasing plate stress. Osteotomy gap healing is required to prevent plate fatigue failure.
Large-diameter total hip arthroplasty modular heads require greater assembly forces for initial stability
Modular components are assembled intra-operatively by the surgeon; as a result, differences in connection strength obtained can be considerable.28 Pull-off force is generally used as a surrogate measure of in-service connection strength, and factors that are known to influence this variable include impaction force;28,41 the number of impaction strikes;28 taper design41,42 and surface roughness.29,42 It is not clear, however, whether there is any influence of the size of the head on the...
