Long-term selection responses in economic traits of three purebred layer lines
ABSTRACT 1. Using phenotypic and pedigree data, genetic parameters were estimated for 12 357 Rhode Island Red-I (RIRI), 13 674 Barred Rock-I (BARI) and 8 481 Colombian Rock (COL) pure line hens. The study focused on age at first egg (AFE), body weight at first egg (BWFE), total egg number by 36 weeks (EN) and average egg weight at 36 weeks (EW). 2.
Deglaciation drove seawater infiltration and slowed submarine groundwater discharge - Nature Geoscience
Abstract Submarine groundwater discharge—the flow of groundwater into the ocean—plays an important role in shaping coastal biogeochemical cycles. The absence of temporal constraints on offshore groundwater dynamics driven by proximal glacial loading hinders our assessment of how its circulation may vary in conceivable ice-free polar regions.

Exploring quasifission dynamics in reactions leading to the formation of $^{225}\mathrm{Pa}$
Abstract Background: Understanding the dynamics of quasifission reactions for the pre-actinides and actinides is particularly important for choosing suitable target projectile combinations to synthesize of superheavy elements.
Ultrasound resonance in coflowing immiscible liquids in a microchannel
Abstract We study ultrasonic resonance in a coflow system comprising a pair of immiscible liquids in a microchannel exposed to bulk acoustic waves. We show using an analytical model that there are two resonating frequencies corresponding to each of the coflowing liquids, which depend on the speed of sound and stream width of the liquid.
Dynamical motion of an oblate shaped particle exposed to an acoustic standing wave in a microchannel
Abstract The nonlinear effects induced on a nonspherical object exposed to an acoustic standing wave offer acoustic radiation force and torque, resulting in the dynamical motion of the object. Here, we study the translational and rotational motion of an oblate shaped particle exposed to standing bulk acoustic waves in a microchannel using numerical simulations.
Flow of bidisperse suspensions under the effect of standing bulk acoustic waves
Abstract Acoustic handling of dense suspension of microparticles has relevance in lab-on-a-chip, food, and pharmaceutical technologies. So far the studies on acoustic focusing of dense suspensions treat the particles to be of the same size, i.e., monodisperse. Here, the flow of dense bidisperse suspensions of microparticles in a microfluidic channel flow exposed to a standing acoustic wave field is studied.

An optomicrofluidic device for the detection and isolation of drop-encapsulated target cells in single-cell format
An optomicrofluidic device for the detection and isolation of drop-encapsulated target cells in single-cell format† Single-cell analysis has emerged as a powerful method for genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics characterisation at the individual cell level. Here, we demonstrate a technique for the detection and selective isolation of target cells encapsulated in microdroplets in single-cell format.
Why Economists Make Terrible Fortunetellers
Tarot cards, tea leaves, fortune cookies—people will try anything to get a glimpse of what’s to come. Even the (presumably rational) economists of the world love to try to predict the future, according to A. K. Sen, A. G. M. Last, and Randolph Quirk. While economists are armed with degrees, data, and historical precedents, they can get it wrong as often as a crystal ball does.

Tobacco smoking and the risk of diverticular disease - a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify whether tobacco smoking is associated with an increased risk of diverticular disease. PubMed and Embase databases were searched for studies of smoking and diverticular disease up to February 19, 2016. Prospective studies that reported adjusted relative risk (RR) estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of diverticular disease associated with current, r or previous smoking were included.
