Back-to-School Shopping Brings Comfort During the Pandemic
My elementary-school colors were purple and green, and in the children’s department at Dillard’s, I made a gleeful discovery: jeans in violet and lime peeking out of cubbyholes lining the walls. When I stepped out of the dressing room, my mom’s hand instinctively darted out to make sure the crotch didn’t sag. It was one of those mortifying childhood moments, when you feel older than your mother sees you. In a few weeks, I’d be entering fifth grade.

Finland: Sauna at the Heart of Family Life
One of my earliest and fondest childhood memories is that of visiting our family’s summer cottage in Tohmajärvi, Finland. This was a summer ritual. One year, my grandfather and his friends build a new sauna building from an old worksite barrack or site hut. It was heated up nearly every evening. There was no shower to wash up after a sauna but that did not matter because you could wash yourself using a ladle. The water heated up in a container above the hot stones.
A Blended Adventure: A Jewish-Muslim Love Story
Our March ‘How We Met’ couple is no ordinary interfaith, mixed race couple. Having first met online, at their first face-to-face meeting, upon learning about their different religions, they even wondered how a Jew and a Muslim relationship would ever work successfully.
Je Suis Métisse. What Being Biracial Means To Me
When I hear the word “mixed-race”, I think of the song “Métisse” (“mixed-race”) by French artist Yannick Noah, which starts like this: I am mixed-race, a mix of colors, I am mixed-race, I come from here and elsewhere! That’s what being mixed-race means for me. I am of Belgian-Congolese descent. When we think of mixed-race people, we often think of someone with obvious and visible traits, like a child with Black and White parents.
Why I'm Proud My Daughter Disappointed Me
Four kisses and an embrace began every meeting with my grandparents. Four breaths, four mmms, four little sucks. First, there were the two I gave, on each of my Amah’s cheeks, and then the two my Amah returned, on each of mine. I’ve often wondered where the tradition began. Growing up, I found that, unlike us, most of my Chinese friends did little kissing and hugging in their families. I love this part of my family tradition, perhaps in part because it was so unique. I felt it made my family special.

Fantasy Books & Novels
In 1900, a former travelling salesman published a book about a girl from Kansas and her adventures in a strange land. It soon became one of the best-loved children's stories of all time, with generations of children growing up with Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West and, of course, Toto.
Empire Issue Preview: Avengers Infinity War, Isle of Dogs, A Quiet Place, Call Me By Your Name
Do you hear that? That’s the sound of Marvel’s heroes quaking in their tights in the run-up to Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos, the MCU’s biggest villain ever, is stepping away from his space throne and rampaging to our world in search of the Infinity Stones, and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might not be enough to stop him this time.

Aunt Beast vs War
As Red surveyed the approaching creatures, her perfect lips curved upward in a smile. Earth had become too small to hold her. She’d done good work there, necessary work, but the whole thing was rather running itself now, wasn’t it? She barely needed to give it a nudge every once in a while. It was almost boring, and she hated boring. So when the portals had started appearing between realities, she’d been one of the first to seize the opportunity.
A Wrinkle in Time: Film is Bright and Beautiful, But Hollow
In general, books are better than their film counterparts. Not everyone reads, I know that, and filmmakers know that, so with any luck, you’ll have an adaptation that can stand on its own. A good adaptation will satisfy the book readers (with a minimum of fuss), and excite non-readers as a separate entity.
Ava DuVernay: Why The Wrinkle In Time Director Is A Complete Hero
It sounds reductive to celebrate the Golden-Globe-nominated (for the brilliant Martin Luther King biopic Selma) and Oscar-nominated (for human rights documentary 13th) director Ava DuVernay for a mere music video. And yet nothing quite encapsulates the talent and relevance of Ms DuVernay better than her eight-minute film for Jay Z’s ‘Family Feud’.
Sade Releases 'Flower of The Universe' From Disney's Future Soundtrack
As Disney's ‘A Wrinkle In Time' motion picture is scheduled to be released on March 9, so will the official soundtrack. For this soundtrack, the film's director asked Sade if she'd step out of retirement to be the leading song for this highly anticipated film featuring Oprah Winfrey. “I never thought she'd say yes, but asked anyway. She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I'll never forget,” the Selma director wrote on Twitter.
Sade's 'Flower of the Universe' From 'A Wrinkle In Time Soundtrack' Gets Shared
A couple of weeks back, ‘A Wrinkle In Time's' director, Ava Duvernay tweeted that Sade would be making her return for a song for the official soundtrack. Yesterday, the song's producer NO I.D. shared the song titled “Flower of the Universe” on Twitter. No I.D. writes “A legend. Sade, it was an honor. #wrinkleintime.” Update: The song was shared on AudioMack but appears to have been removed due to a DMCA complaint. Since then, Kaskade tweeted “Will send nudes (of my dog) to be able to hear this song.
Oscar autopsy
Jimmy Kimmel opened by calling for a night for positivity, so I will begin my coverage of the 90th Annual Academy Awards accordingly. (Not surprisingly, threats of controversy never materialized.) While accepting this year’s Best Supporting Actor award, Sam Rockwell remembered the day his dad showed up in the principal’s office “looking very sullen.” “‘We’ve gotta go,” he recalled Dad saying.
Cage Match 2018 Round 1: Ax vs Aunt Beast
The arena was a muted grey beneath the gas-shrouded radiance of the alien sun. Spectators gathered around the edges of the battleground, creatures of all shapes and sizes, some as tall as redwoods with shaggy heads stuck in the outer envelopes of the atmosphere, others low and crawling, multi-limbed.
A Wrinkle In Time Premiere & After Party
“I’m going to Hollywood, ” I used to tell my friends in school all the time….and it was true. Every few weeks my mom would pick my brother and I up from school on a Friday, and we would head down south to visit family. We would go to Hollywood, Fl that is. My friends would say, “are you going to see movie stars?” I may have left out the Florida part when telling people. Hey – what girl doesn’t want to go to Hollywood?
The Culture Guide 2018: 13 Essential Things To Watch, Read & See

My Reading List this Month....
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I read. A lot. At the beginning of every month, I usually make a reading list of books I want to get to that month. I’ve been asked how I find the time, and lets’ say that reading is a priority for me, so I make time for it. At the beginning of the month, I usually choose 5 books that I want to get through that month and go from there. This post contains affiliate links.
'Wrinkle in Time' Director to Make 'New Gods' Film for DC, Which Is Perfect
One of DC Comics’ most important, celebrated and, often, straight-up crazy franchises is headed to the big screen, and it appears Warner Bros. has nabbed just the right director. A Wrinkle In Time director Ava DuVernay is reportedly going to direct a movie adaptation of DC’s New Gods, legendary comics creator Jack Kirby’s mythic space superhero epic.
26 Authors on the Books They're Giving Kids This Holiday | Read It Forward
A shared love of books is a bond that transcends time and spans generations. Reading books as a child is a powerfully formative experience. So many of our early memories are shaped by the stories we read and by the characters who enter our hearts. Giving a beloved book to a child of any age, even adult children, is a reflection of the hopes and dreams we have for our offspring.
TIME: 4 Books on a Big Topic
In this month’s installment of my extremely (moderately) popular column, I give you: Time. It heals all wounds and flies like an arrow. Tennessee Williams said that “Time is the longest distance between two places,” and William Faulkner said that “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” Albert Einstein called time an illusion, Riff Raff sings that it’s fleeting. Whatever time is, there’s been a lot written about it, both in the fictional and nonfictional realms.

A Wrinkle In Time Casts Michael Peña As Red
After impressing many with the civil rights drama Selma and acclaimed documentary 13th, director Ava DuVernay is going to try her hand at big-budget genre filmmaking. She is calling the shots on Disney’s adaptation of the popular science fantasy novel A Wrinkle In Time, which recently began production.
