Michael Moore: Best Documentary Oscar Will Be Chosen By the Full Academy
Michael Moore told Indiewire that the new Academy rule requiring a Los Angeles Times or New York Times review to qualify documentaries for Oscar consideration is only one of many “great new changes” that will “prevent the concerns that have existed since ‘Roger & Me.'” “The concerns,” of course, refer to the now-perennial story of the popular and well-regarded documentaries that are overlooked by the Academy every year.

INTERVIEW: Cronenberg Talks Intellectual Menage a Trois A Dangerous Method, Knightley’s Bondage
There’s a lot going on in David Cronenberg’s provocative period biopic “A Dangerous Method.” Cronenberg (“A History of Violence”) and Christopher Hampton (“Dangerous Liaisons”) conduct a brainy, controlled examination of the intense relationships between the pioneers of psychoanalysis, elder Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and younger acolyte Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and two well-educated but neurotic patients (Keira Knightley, Vincent Cassell) who challenge their ideas about sexuality...

Watch: Trailer for "Andrew Bird: Fever Year" -- And Why You May Not Ever See The Film Xan Aranda’s debut, “Andrew Bird: Fever Year,” was one of few world premieres at the New York Film Festival and it feels like a discovery. It isn’t a concert film and it certainly isn’t a personal documentary. However, it’s a music documentary that’s entertaining, lyrical and oddly revealing. And it’s definitely worth seeing — if you can.

INTERVIEW | Drugs, Meet Movies: Tao Lin and Megan Boyle’s MDMAfilms
Filmmakers Tao Lin and Megan Boyle aren’t the first people to find causal connection in drugs and art, but they may have broken new ground in their conspicuous consumption. The name of their production company, MDMAfilms, is the embodiment of truth in advertising: They take drugs and then they make movies. It’s Not Just Documentaries: The IRS Could Turn Independent Film into a “Hobby”
With the International Documentary Association doing battle with the IRS, it’s easy to believe only documentary filmmakers face the threat of their films being considered hobbies — and therefore nonprofit activities. That would be a mistake. “We didn’t raise (independent fiction filmmakers) in our brief because it seems like it would muddy the waters,” said attorney Michael Donaldson, who is representing the IDA as a “friend of the court” in the case.
