The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 included several provisions aiming to control drug spending for Medicare and its beneficiaries. In addition to capping out-of-pocket costs in Part D, the IRA enables Medicare to negotiate prices for certain high-cost drugs. The price negotiation provision in the IRA is aligned with the market competition–driven framework fostered by the 1984 Hatch-Waxman Act and the 2009 Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA).

Methods We examined six low-value cancer treatments (Table 1): two nonrecommended treatments and four high-cost treatments for which low-cost alternatives are available. The two nonrecommended treatments were (1) granulocyte-colony stimulating factors (GCSFs) for patients receiving low-risk chemotherapy and (2) denosumab for castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC).
