Freedom of expression: Student not reinstated after a year

Freedom of expression: Student not reinstated after a year

University World News — In this report I wrote for University World News, I reported on how several Nigerian students have faced disciplinary actions and intimidation for expressing dissenting views about their universities and political leaders on social media, developments that human rights activists argue pose a serious threat to freedom of expression in Nigeria. Among the cases I reported is that of Varsue Lortim, who was expelled shortly after completing his final exams following a Facebook post criticising the Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) over issues related to NUC accreditation. Despite a directive from the House of Representatives calling for his reinstatement, Lortim remains out of school more than a year later. I also reported numerous other incidents over recent years in which students have been harassed, suspended, or expelled by university authorities for simply exercising their constitutional right to free expression.

Crowdfunding, unions, religious groups help students with fees

University World News — Amid tuition fee hikes of 80% to 400% since 2023 at universities across Nigeria – and more expected in 2025 – many students, in particular those at government-subsidised institutions, now count on crowdfunding as well as goodwill gestures from academics and religious groups to raise the money they need to study. The spikes in tuition fees are a symptom of worsening inflation rates and its attendant widespread hardship, which has impacted over 133 million, or 63%, of the population in Nigeria – in particular, the poor.
