Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Internship at the international department of TVN in Chile.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Never.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has made parasocial relationships even more important to the news cycle.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tintin. He’s persistent and always willing to follow a story wherever it leads, even when that means getting far more involved than any sensible reporter probably should.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To me, being a journalist means cleaving through the noise to give people information that matters, whether it educates them, entertains them, or helps them better understand the world around them.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I prefer concise, direct pitches that quickly explain what the story is, why it matters now, and what makes it interesting or different.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I primarily use Slack, Trello, Google Workspace, and content management systems for day-to-day editorial work.

What's your favorite social network?

YouTube. It’s one of my favorite places to learn about pretty much anything.

Why did you become a journalist?

I went to University to study journalism.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I’m particularly proud of the long-form crime features I’ve worked on, especially those that go beyond the headline to reconstruct a case in depth and explore the people, institutions, and circumstances behind it.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

To work on developing their own voice. In the age of AI, your personal brand is everything.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Reaction angles about celebrity body parts.

What's your favorite drink?

Apple juice.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

The gym, hiking, or enjoying a coffee with my loved ones.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Reuters.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That we are superficial.
