What was your first job as a journalist?
As an associate editor at a local fashion magazine. I steamed so many party dresses used the words "fun and flirty" way too many times.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Never. I have no idea how to even work one. Me working on a typewriter would probably be like watching my mom try and navigate Excel.
How is social media changing news?
It's making it easier for really strong, smart reporting to be found, but it also makes it easier for good things to get buried.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I truly love Jon Stewart, but I don't know if he's technically a fictional journalist as he and his colleagues do some surprisingly good work
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means that you have a responsibility to do the right thing all the time.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
The loose llama event last year spurred some good ones. Such an example of how the Internet has made news better.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Via email with a possible angle included. Usually I don't go with that exact angle but it gets my brain thinking.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I love my Livescribe pen and use it profusely. Other than that, I'm basically a luddite, using Word, iPhoto and other entry level software.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter! It allows for the perfect amount of interaction with strangers.
Who do you wish followed you?
Tina Fey, but that's just because I want her to be my friend.
Why did you become a journalist?
I think people's stories are important. Getting to capture and tell those stories seems like the best job in the world.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Nope! Actually, I didn't realize I wanted to get involved in journalism until my early 20s.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Tough one. I've got something coming out in the July Runner's World issue that I'm particularly fond of.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Work hard, over deliver, and remember that you're not there to make friends.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Mornings early in the week. By Friday I'm almost always jamming on deadlines.
