Beard re-signs new contract
The Ospreys are proud to announce Wales and British and Irish Lions lock Adam Beard has signed a new deal to stay with his home region. Beard, 26, a recent British and Irish Lion has signed a new three-year contract. The second row’s leadership qualities were recognised when he captained the Ospreys for the first time this season. A Grand Slam winner and world cup semi-finalist with Wales in 2019, Beard made his Test debut for the Lions against the Springboks in South Africa in 2021.
1.3 | TACTICAL TWEAKS AND SEASON REVIEW
DOMINATION. The league was very comfortable in the end. Despite being far more shaky in the second half of the season, losing 7 of the last 18 games, we still managed to retain our 12 point advantage by season’s end.
1.1 | IT STARTS ON THE TRAINING PITCH
GRAFT. ‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’ TIM NOTKE With the season now underway, I’ve been putting my plan into action when it comes to training. FM21 was the first time I looked at doing my own training, inspired entirely by Fox in the Box FM’s incredible training playlist. However, I only really skimmed the surface, creating two schedules; one attacking and one defensive; alternating between the two. This year, it’s time to level up.
FC VOLENDAM: ROOKIE HIRED TO REPLACE WIM JONK
Wim Jonk has left his post at FC Volendam with the club citing ‘a difference in future visions’. It’s understood that he is the only casualty, and the coaching staff will remain in place under the new manager. Dan Heijsman is a former Dutch U21 international who retired through injury in 1998; after a long time out of football he’s taken his first job in management after gaining his coaching badges.
0.2 | ESTABLISHING A DNA
IDENTITY. Identity is talked about a lot in football, especially lately. Poor old Ole Gunnar Solskjær probably twitches when he hears the word, such is the heat he’s getting about his lack of it. As I mentioned in 0.1 | De Herstart, one of the first things I’ll set out to achieve at Volendam is implementing and developing a club DNA.
FOOTBALL MANAGER 2022 - WHO ARE WE EXCITED TO MANAGE?
Welcome back to On the Break! With Sports Interactive having dropped the first glimpses of Football Manager 2022, it’s safe to say hype season is fully upon us! So I’ve been thinking forward to the new game, and who I’m excited to manage. That doesn’t really make for much of an article though, so I’ve enlisted the help of some friends! These aren’t necessarily ‘save reveals’ for the new game, just a club each we’re excited to do a save with at some point.
LA CELESTE - THE 2030 WORLD CUP!
Welcome back to On the Break! Last time out, Maxi guided his Uruguay side through qualification and gave out a load of debuts. Now we’ve arrived at the big time, it’s the 2030 World Cup! SQUAD SELECTION There were a few headaches when it came to selecting the squad, most notably at right-back. Diego de los Santos is the best right-back in the country by a distance, but has a long term injury and won’t be available for the World Cup.
GETTING THE BEST FROM A BALL-PLAYING DEFENDER
Welcome back to On the Break! There hasn’t been a new Tactical Aspects post for 4 months! Time to correct that, I think. This time out we’re going to take a look at one single player role, the Ball-Playing Defender. I use this role a lot, and many others do too, but I think there are a couple of misconceptions about what the role actually offers and how to get the best from it. THE ROLE The Ball-Playing Defender is a role that can be selected for central defenders within Football Manager.
EL VIOLETA - 2028 INTERMEDIO AND CLAUSURA…ISH
Welcome back to On the Break! Last time out we got off to an incredible start to the league campaign, although Peñarol are hanging in there behind us! There’s a lot of big news to cover in this post, so let’s get cracking! NEW JOB?

EL VIOLETA - 2028 PRE-SEASON AND APERTURA
Welcome back to On the Break! Doesn’t real life just get in the way?! It’s 3 weeks since I gave the last update, the end of the 2027 season, and I’ve barely had time to sit at the PC since! Here we are though, ready to get the 2028 season underway! YOUTH INTAKE Underwhelmed. In theory there’s a lot of potential in this group, but I just don’t see anything I like from them.
EL VIOLETA - 2027 PRE-SEASON AND APERTURA
Welcome back to On the Break! Click HERE if you haven’t seen the last post in the series, where we concluded the 2026 season. Redemption was the key word last year, getting back to where we had been since the save started; now we need to try and kick on again. YOUTH INTAKE Don’t get me wrong, having high potential strikers coming through the youth intake every season is never going to be a problem.
HOW MENTALITY AFFECTS PLAYER ROLES
Welcome back to On the Break! Today we continue the Tactical Aspects series, with a post covering a topic I’d never really considered before – the effect that mentality has on player roles. If you’d like to catch up on the previous posts in the series, you can do so by clicking HERE. It’s hard to remember a time where you didn’t have a list of roles per position, but way back in Football Manager 2010 it was a brand new feature, replacing the iconic arrows and sliders.
EL VIOLETA - 2026 INTERMEDIO AND CLAUSURA
Welcome back to On the Break! If you aren’t up to date with the series, click HERE to see how the first half of the 2026 season went. There’s a lot to cover in this post; league form, the Sudamericana, and even some transfer dealings! We best get a move on! TORNEO INTERMEDIO We had a strong showing in the Apertura, just 2 points behind Nacional and Peñarol, in stark contrast to last year where we finished 5th and looking really poor.
Opinion: Testing learners straight away is a waste of time
It’s pointless assessing short-term memory, writes Adam Beard – it’s employees’ ability to store knowledge in their long-term memory that really counts Since Ebbinghaus first came up with his theory of the ‘forgetting curve’ in 1885, we have understood that memory degrades and the approximate rate at which it degrades, and that repetition in the learning process (eg active recall) aids knowledge retention.
This week’s international HR headlines: flexible working in Singapore, slow recruitment in the UAE and ‘brain gain’ in Hong Kong
Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MoM) has launched a Tripartite Standard on Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA), in a move that reflects increasing demand from employees for greater work-life balance. According to the MoM, employers that offer flexible hours are more likely to attract and retain talent. The new FWA already has more than 250 adopters. 2.
Gender equality at work has barely improved in 10 years, report finds
The UK’s gender equality at work has barely budged in 10 years, a recent report has found, sparking warnings that women could be waiting decades to see a real difference. The Gender Equality Index 2017, which was published by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) earlier this week, also revealed that gender equality at work across the EU as a whole had improved little between 2005 and 2015.
HR news, jobs & blogs
In his seminal 1835 study, Democracy in America, French political thinker Alexis de Tocqueville wrote: “Amongst democratic nations, each generation is a new people.” In recent years, de Tocqueville’s theory has gained new currency. And the idea that different generations view the world according to their own specific outlook is particularly relevant in the workplace, where there are currently at least five generations jostling for managerial attention.
