The Jewish Nomad: Ilana Zackon spent Purim springing back on stage (with some friends)
It had been two-and-half-years since I last performed on a stage.Purim 2022 made the return of something I love to do come true. How, you may ask? Temple Sinai, a Reform synagogue in the North York area of Toronto, was paying tribute to a legendary member. The show was called A Star is Borsht, and I was fortunate to be selected as one of the performers.
Doorstep Postings: The politics of Ontario are yours to discover not much room for arguments
This is the eighth in a series of opinion columns on the 2022 Ontario provincial election, written by Josh Lieblein for The CJN. I’m not exactly sure when I realized that, in most of Ontario, disagreement is treated as a rude intrusion at best and a threat at worst. So deeply embedded is this taboo against conflict that I broke it constantly in my sojourns outside the Jewish community—without knowing it was there to break.
Three Montreal rabbis are now reflecting on the tragedy and humanity they witnessed at the Ukrainian-Poland border-and they urge Canadians to do more
Some might say there was no need for three Canadian rabbis to leave the comfort of our congregations and the safety of Canada to travel to the Polish-Ukrainian border, but we felt an obligation to provide whatever aid and support we could to the refugees fleeing war. We simply could not sit back while preaching about the responsibility to support those in need without taking steps to exercise that responsibility ourselves.
Opinion: Why a Montreal rabbi brought his teenager to the Ukrainian border
I pray that this experience will encourage her to help others with a sensitivity and empathy born from her real-life experiences. Author of the article: Adam Scheier • Special to Montreal Gazette A mother sleeps with her children among many others in a temporary shelter hosting Ukrainian refugees located in a former shopping centre near the Polish city of Przemysl, located close to the border with Ukraine, on March 8, 2022.

Opinion: Swastikas on the doors of our synagogue
We can do so much better in addressing the hateful speech and ideas that lead to destructive behaviour. Author of the article: Adam Scheier • Special to Montreal Gazette Publishing date: Jan 14, 2021 • 30 minutes ago • 3 minute read "Tragically, symbols of hatred are neither shocking nor unexpected, but there is an acute pain when they land at one’s own front door," writes Rabbi Adam Scheier.
Opinion: Montreal congregations are ready to mark Rosh Hashana — safely
The decisions we make — and the precautions we take — will be part of the story told by future generations. Author of the article: Mark Fishman • Yechezkel Freundlich Publishing date: Sep 17, 2020 • • 3 minute read Israeli soldiers guard the Jerusalem Great Synagogue, which will be closed over Jewish New Year because of the pandemic. The COVID-19 lockdown: We may be isolated this Passover, but we’ll keep it together
By Rabbi Adam Scheier Lately, I’ve felt like the Beatles’ Father McKenzie, “Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear; no one comes near.” Our synagogues are shuttered, our schools have closed, and we are sequestered in our homes. Truthfully, the sermons and lessons have been heard, through online outreach pre-recorded services, live video classes, and more. We have learned to reconstitute our congregation as a virtual community.
Opinion: Passover in the time of COVID-19 doesn't have to be lonely

Opinion: Even amid sadness, the opportunity for blessing emerges
Flowers surround Stars of David on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018, part of a makeshift memorial outside the Tree of Life Synagogue to the 11 people killed during worship services Saturday Oct. 27, 2018 in Pittsburgh. Gene J. Puskar / AP I recently learned about the “Pittsburgh Left.” This refers not to a progressive political movement but to a genteel — albeit benignly illegal — traffic norm: as the light turns green, one allows the first oncoming car to make a left.
Opinion: Ensuring Florida parents living a nightmare didn’t suffer alone
A police officer tells parents waiting at Coral Springs Drive and the Sawgrass Expressway to go to the Marriott Hotel to meet up with their kids following a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018. Amy Beth Bennett / South Florida Sun-Sentinel via AP “Where the #&%# is my son!?!”The man yelling these words was simply expressing the feelings of everyone in the room.
Owning your seder, making it meaningful
Rabbi Scheier: Congregational rabbis are no strangers to preparing for the holidays. Whether it’s drafting Rosh Hashanah sermons, planning Shavuot learning, or programming for Chanukah, we try to stay ahead of the calendar. It seems to me, however, that Passover is the one holiday during which our congregants join us in this intense advance preparation.
Rabbi to Rabbi: What are the Jewish Lessons from the Super Bowl
Rabbi Scheier: My congregation, like many others, hosts a Super Bowl viewing party. We use this major media event as an opportunity to create connection and energy among our members, and it has become a well-attended program. The Chafetz Chaim once said that the innovations of his era taught profound life lessons. The telephone taught that our words can travel and have far-reaching impact. The telegraph taught that words have value and should be used prudently.
Opinion: In solidarity with the Jews of Whitefish, Mont.
Whitefish residents rally against a proposed neo-Nazi march in downtown Whitefish, Mont., on Jan. 16. Brenda Ahearn / The Daily Inter Lake via AP As if from a Coen Brothers film, the surreal scene unfolded: Around a small, dimly lit table in the police station of a remote corner of Montana, sat a police chief and six Orthodox rabbis.
Sermonizing about U.S. politics - The Canadian Jewish News
The American presidential election contains a treasure trove of High Holiday themes, but some issues may not resonate in Canada, and alienating congregants is always a risk Rabbi Scheier: It’s that time of year again, as we begin to prepare our High Holiday messages to our congregations. Many of my rabbinic colleagues from the United States tell me that once every four years, the discussions surrounding the presidential elections dictate the sermon topics.
At Auschwitz with Justin Trudeau, tears came more easily than words

Opinion: Canada should welcome Jews who wish to leave France
In 19th century Jewish shtetls of Eastern Europe, if a person were particularly joyful, his or her friends might exclaim, “You are as happy as a Jew in France!” Today, on the streets of Paris, this phrase is still bandied about by the Jewish community — however, the tone is decidedly sarcastic. The Jews in France are not happy. They are sad, they are afraid, and many are looking to leave. I spent the last two days in Paris on a solidarity visit following last week’s terror attacks.
